It is widely accepted that oxidative stress (OS) coming from a wide variety of causes has detrimental effects on male fertility. Antioxidants could have a significant role in the treatment of male infertility, and the current systematic review on the role of melatonin to ameliorate OS clearly shows that improvement of semen parameters follows melatonin supplementation. Although melatonin has considerable promise, further studies are needed to clarify its ability to preserve or restore semen quality under stress conditions in varied species.

Article Synopsis
  • Cryopreservation helps in the reproduction of fish species by providing a stable supply of sperm and conserving genetic material, aiding in species conservation and genetic improvements.
  • The freezing and warming processes can harm sperm quality due to oxidative stress, making antioxidants like melatonin important in enhancing cryopreservation outcomes.
  • While melatonin has shown promising results in preserving male fertility in farm animals and humans, more research is needed on its effects in various male fish species during semen cryopreservation.
