Serum Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein Concentration Increases More After Running Than Swimming for Older People.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is common in older people. Serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (sCOMP) is a biomarker of knee articular cartilage metabolism. The purpose of this study was 2-fold: to (1) determine acute effects of running and swimming on sCOMP concentration in older people; and (2) investigate relationships between sCOMP concentration change due to running and swimming and measures of knee health in older people.

Pending appendicectomy: a personal experience and review of a doctor's own illness.

Doctors will inevitably 1 day become patients. Whether as an acute emergency or as part of routine screening, doctors often find it difficult to recognise and act on their own healthcare needs. This article aims to provide a personal account and reflections from the point of view of a doctor in denial about his acute appendicitis, and a friend and fellow colleague's attempts to convince him to seek help.

Medical students' reactions to an experience-based learning model of clinical education.

An experience-based learning (ExBL) model proposes: Medical students learn in workplaces by 'supported participation'; affects are an important dimension of support; many learning outcomes are affective; supported participation influences students' professional identity development. The purpose of the study was to check how the model, which is the product of a series of earlier research studies, aligned with students' experiences, akin to the 'member checking' stage of a qualitative research project. In three group discussions, a researcher explained ExBL to 19 junior clinical students, who discussed how it corresponded with their experiences of clinical learning and were given a written précis of it to take away.
