Many anesthetics cause loss of responsiveness despite having diverse underlying molecular and circuit actions. To explore the convergent effects of these drugs, we examined how anesthetic doses of ketamine and dexmedetomidine affected oscillations in the prefrontal cortex of nonhuman primates. Both anesthetics caused increases in phase locking in the ventrolateral and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, within and across hemispheres.

The primate inferior temporal cortex contains neurons that respond more strongly to faces than to other objects. Termed “face neurons,” these neurons are thought to be selective for faces as a semantic category. However, face neurons also partly respond to clocks, fruits, and single eyes, raising the question of whether face neurons are better described as selective for visual features related to faces but dissociable from them.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied a male patient (DGAP294) with severe developmental delays and complex chromosomal abnormalities but normal DNA array and exome results.
  • The patient has two new balanced translocations affecting several genes, but these disruptions alone don't explain his symptoms.
  • They propose that the clinical issues are likely due to a position effect on the FOXG1 gene, which is tied to conditions like Rett syndrome, highlighting the need to look beyond just the disrupted genes.
