Multicentre redox proteins participate in diverse metabolic processes, such as redox shuttling, multielectron catalysis, or long-distance electron conduction. The detail in which these processes can be analysed depends on the capacity of experimental methods to discriminate the multiple microstates that can be populated while the protein changes from the fully reduced to the fully oxidized state. The population of each state depends on the redox potential of the individual centres and on the magnitude of the interactions between the individual redox centres with their neighbours.

Photoferrotrophic iron oxidation is one of the most ancient metabolisms, sustained by the operon coding for three proteins: PioB and PioA, which form an outer-membrane porin-cytochrome complex that oxidizes iron outside of the cell and transfers the electrons to the periplasmic high potential iron-sulfur protein (HIPIP) PioC, which delivers them to the light-harvesting reaction center (LH-RC). The intestine of marine fishes contributes to the ocean carbon cycle producing carbonate aggregates as part of the osmoregulatory process. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate physiological adjustments of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) intestine to a higher pCO environment likely in the near future (~1700 μatm). In marine fish the intestinal HCO secretion is the key mechanism to enable luminal aggregate formation and water absorption. Using the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), the present study aimed at establishing the functional and molecular organization of different sections of the intestine concerning bicarbonate secretion and Cl movements. The versatile anaerobic metabolism of the Gram-negative bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (SOMR-1) relies on a multitude of redox proteins found in its periplasm. Most are multiheme cytochromes that carry electrons to terminal reductases of insoluble electron acceptors located at the cell surface, or bona fide terminal reductases of soluble electron acceptors. Recent progress in bacterial genomic analysis has revealed a vast number of genes that encode c-type cytochromes that contain multiple heme cofactors. This high number of multiheme cytochromes in several bacteria has been correlated with their great respiratory flexibility, and in what concerns biotechnological applications, has been correlated with electricity production in Microbial Fuel Cells. An efficient transformation and expression system was developed for the industrially relevant basidiomycete Pycnoporus cinnabarinus. This was used to transform a laccase-deficient monokaryotic strain with the homologous lac1 laccase gene placed under the regulation of its own promoter or that of the SC3 hydrophobin gene or the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) gene of Schizophyllum commune.
