Objective: To analyze smears of 197 thyroid follicular tumors (adenoma and carcinoma).

Study Design: Several types of artificial neural networks (ANN) of various designs were used for diagnosis of thyroid follicular tumors. The typical complex of cytologic features, some nuclear morphometric parameters (area, perimeter, shape factor) and density features of chromatin texture (mean value and SD of gray levels) were defined for each tumor.

The peptidoglycan recognition protein Tag7 is shown to form a stable 1:1 complex with the major stress protein Hsp70. Neither protein is cytotoxic by itself, but their complex induces apoptotic death in several tumor-derived cell lines even at subnanomolar concentrations. The minimal part of Hsp70 needed to evoke cytotoxicity is residues 450-463 of its peptide-binding domain, but full cytotoxicity requires its ATPase activity; remarkably, Tag7 liberated from the complex at high ATP is not cytotoxic.

We characterised a novel, charge-insufficient isosteric analogue of spermine, 11-[(amino)oxy]-4,9-diaza-1-aminoundecane (AOSPM). This analogue was synthesised by displacing aminopropyl group by aminooxyethyl group, the latter having pK(a) of about 5. Charge deficiency of the AOSPM molecule was fixed at a definite atom, while pK(a) of the rest nitrogen was similar to the parent polyamine.
