As various fullerene derivatives have been developed, it is necessary to explore their photophysical properties for potential use in photoelectronics and medicine. Here, we address the photophysical properties of newly synthesized water-soluble fullerene-based nanoparticles and polyhydroxylated fullerene as a representative water-soluble fullerene derivative. They show broad emission band arising from a wide-range of excitation energies.

Absorption, luminescence, and excitation spectra, luminescence decay and film morphology were found to depend sensitively on the changes in molecule structure, nature and temperature of the substrate, as well as the thermovacuum deposition rate, being the origins of bad reproducibility of the optical properties of such films. Molecular aggregation with chromophore dipoles arranged parallel to each other has been observed in absorption and luminescence spectra.

The present work reports the study of fluorescent properties of 5,15-DiMPyP, both monomeric and aggregated in presence of DNA, performed by means of steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The S1 state of free monomeric 5,15-DiMPyP is affected by a low-lying intramolecular charge transfer state which is destabilized upon porphyrin monomer binding to DNA.
