The paper describes the introduction and estimation of performance criteria for the gelling agent injection technology based on a general approach to modeling physical and chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. The current mathematical models do not include performance criteria for the process of gelling agent injection and do not allow for assessing the level of success of a treatment job in production wells. The paper introduces such criteria for the first time.

Increased interest in development of combined gene therapy emerges from results of recent clinical trials that indicate good safety yet unexpected low efficacy of "single-gene" administration. Multiple studies showed that vascular endothelial growth factor 165 aminoacid form (VEGF165) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) can be used for induction of angiogenesis in ischemic myocardium and skeletal muscle. Gene transfer system composed of a novel cytomegalovirus-based (CMV) plasmid vector and codon-optimized human VEGF165 and HGF genes combined with intramuscular low-voltage electroporation was developed and tested in vitro and in vivo.

The aim of this study was to establish the criteria for methodology of cellular "anti-IGF-I" therapy of malignant tumours and particularly for glioblastoma multiforme. The treatment of primary glioblastoma patients using surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy was followed by subcutaneous injection of autologous cancer cells transfected by IGF-I antisense/triple helix expression vectors. The prepared cell "vaccines" should it be in the case of glioblastomas or other tumours, have shown a change of phenotype, the absence of IGF-I protein, and expression of MHC-I and B7.

FCRL6 receptor is a more recently identified representative of the FCRL family. We generated a panel of mouse mAbs to baculovirus-derived recombinant FCRL6 protein. The clone 7B2 was found to specifically recognize a 63kDa protein expressed preferentially on the surface of CD8 T and CD56 NK cells in human peripheral blood and spleen.

In previous studies, we showed that ganglioside levels (GM3 being the main ganglioside) in human aortic intima isolated from atherosclerotic lesions were 5 times greater compared to intima from non-diseased vascular areas. Recently, we found that GM3 and GM3 synthase levels in differentiated in vitro macrophages were five and ten times higher, respectively, compared to freshly isolated human monocytes. In this article, we report that GM3 synthase mRNA levels were significantly higher in differentiated human monocyte-derived macrophages compared to monocytes and in atherosclerotic aorta compared to normal aorta.

Urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) is required for both endogenous and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-augmented angiogenesis in normal tissues, leading us to hypothesize that uPA augmentation by gene transfer might promote angiogenesis in ischemic tissues. Overexpression of uPA was studied in rat myocardial infarction (MI) and mouse hind limb ischemia models and compared with VEGF overexpression effects. Animals were divided into control and three experimental groups (n = 6), receiving intramuscular injections of plasmids as follows: (i) control (empty vector or expressing beta-galactosidase); (ii) uPA; (iii) VEGF(165); (iv) a 1:1 mixture of uPA and VEGF(165).

Alterations in the expression of growth factors and their receptors are associated with the growth and development of human tumors. One such growth factor is IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor I ), a 70-amino-acid polypeptide expressed in many tissues, including brain. IGF-I is also expressed at high levels in some nervous system-derived tumors, especially in glioblastoma.
