A central question in the underdoped cuprates pertains to the nature of the pseudogap ground state. A conventional metallic ground state of the pseudogap region has been argued to host quantum oscillations upon destruction of the superconducting order parameter by modest magnetic fields. Here, we use low applied measurement currents and millikelvin temperatures on ultrapure single crystals of underdoped [Formula: see text] to unearth an unconventional quantum vortex matter ground state characterized by vanishing electrical resistivity, magnetic hysteresis, and nonohmic electrical transport characteristics beyond the highest laboratory-accessible static fields.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Alexander J Hickey"

  • - Alexander J Hickey's research focuses on the properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors, particularly the nature of the pseudogap ground state in underdoped materials.
  • - In his 2021 study, he investigates an unconventional quantum vortex matter state that exhibits striking characteristics such as vanishing electrical resistivity and magnetic hysteresis when subjected to low applied currents and extreme temperatures.
  • - The findings suggest that upon the destruction of the superconducting order by modest magnetic fields, this state can reveal quantum oscillations, providing new insights into the behavior of underdoped cuprates and the mechanisms underlying their superconductivity.
