Background: Untreated low back pain (LBP) in older adults can lead to disability and development of chronicity. Due to the potential development of medical comorbidities and negative risks associated with pharmacological use, chronic LBP management for older adults requires a responsive approach.
Methods: The objective of this study is to evaluate the probability of (1) opioid prescription receipt and (2) opioid-sedative coprescription, in a sample of military-service-connected patients enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) or TRICARE, ages 30-85 years, receiving care in three systems: VHA, Military Health System (MHS), and nonfederal (civilian) healthcare facilities.
Objective: To investigate inequities in time-to physical therapy for patients with low back pain.
Design: Retrospective observational study utilizing data from the Department of Defense and Veterans Health Administration clinical and administrative data repositories derived from medical records, claims, and enrollment data.
Setting: Military Health System, Veterans Health System, and civilian healthcare facilities.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective cohort study included claims data of Black and non-Latinx White patients who were active-duty service members or military retirees who received a persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) diagnosis associated with back surgery within the US Military Health System, January 2017 to January 2020 (N = 8753).
Objective: The goal was to evaluate institutional inequities in the US Military Health System in knee arthroplasty receipt within three years of knee osteoarthritis diagnosis when accounting for other treatments received (eg, physical therapy, medications).
Methods: In this retrospective observational cohort study, medical record data of patients (n = 29,734) who received a primary osteoarthritis diagnosis in the US Military Health System between January 2016 and January 2020 were analyzed. Data included receipt of physical therapy one year before diagnosis and up to three years after diagnosis, prediagnosis opioid and nonopioid prescription receipt, health-related factors associated with levels of racism, and the primary outcome, knee arthroplasty receipt within three years after diagnosis.
