Objectives: Impaired nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability may contribute to microvascular dysfunction in sepsis. Excessive plasma NO consumption has been attributed to scavenging by circulating cell-free hemoglobin. This may be a mechanism for NO deficiency in sepsis and critical illness.
