Background: The most appropriate management following primary traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation in young adults is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated operative versus non-operative management. The primary outcome measure was re-dislocation rate, in contrast to the often reported 'recurrent instability', which includes subjective instability.

Introduction: Shoulder instability is a common problem for military personnel due to the highly physical demands of work and training. This study assessed the pattern of glenoid labrum tears suffered by serving UK military personnel, the reliability of preoperative diagnostic methods (magnetic resonance arthrogram (MRA) vs clinical examination) and, finally, the outcomes of arthroscopic stabilisation in terms of satisfaction, pain, and return to sport and full deployment.

Methods: Retrospective demographic and clinical data were collected for all patients within our unit who underwent arthroscopic shoulder stabilisation between September 2016 and January 2019.

  • Scientists created a new type of gel that can keep vaccines and other biological materials safe and stable even in hot temperatures, up to 65°C.
  • This smart gel works by using a special method to trap and release these materials when needed, making it easier to transport and store them.
  • The researchers also found that the gel is safe to use in living things, which is great news for helping with health and saving money on cold storage!

Article Synopsis
  • Some types of leukemia called AML can have a gene mutation called FLT3-ITD, which makes it harder to treat and results in poor outcomes for patients.
  • Researchers have found a protein called TOPK that is present in cancer cells but not in normal cells, and when they stopped this protein from working, the cancer cells died.
  • Treating mice with a special drug that targets TOPK helped them live longer compared to those not treated, suggesting that targeting TOPK could be a new way to treat the tough types of AML related to FLT3-ITD.
