Terminology in ecology and evolutionary biology disproportionately harms marginalized groups.

The discipline of ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB) has long grappled with issues of inclusivity and representation, particularly for individuals with systematically excluded and marginalized backgrounds or identities. For example, significant representation disparities still persist that disproportionately affect women and gender minorities; Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC); individuals with disabilities; and people who are LGBTQIA+. Recent calls for action have urged the EEB community to directly address issues of representation, inclusion, justice, and equity.

Randomized trial of routine versus on-demand intraoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in lung transplantation: A feasibility study.

In most centers, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the preferred means to provide cardiopulmonary support during lung transplantation. However, there is controversy about whether intraoperative venoarterial (VA) ECMO should be used routinely or selectively. A randomized controlled trial is the best way to address this controversy.

Teaching Through the Student Lens: Qualitative Exploration of Student Evaluations of Teaching.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to use feedback from student evaluations of teaching (SETs) to define and describe themes associated with perceived teaching effectiveness.

Purpose: Emergence from anesthesia is a critical period and cough can result in adverse effects. Propofol inhibits airway reflexes and when infused it reduces cough more than inhalation anesthesia does. We evaluated the effect of a propofol bolus given at emergence on the incidence of coughing following a desflurane-based anesthesia.

The role of intramolecular relaxations on the structure and stability of vapor-deposited glasses.

Stable glasses (SGs) are formed through surface-mediated equilibration (SME) during physical vapor deposition (PVD). Unlike intermolecular interactions, the role of intramolecular degrees of freedom in this process remains unexplored. Here, using experiments and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that varying dihedral rotation barriers of even a single bond, in otherwise isomeric molecules, can strongly influence the structure and stability of PVD glasses.

Purpose: Erector spinae plane blocks (ESPB) and pectointercostal fascial (PIFB) plane blocks are novel interfascial blocks for which local anesthetic (LA) doses and concentrations necessary to achieve safe and effective analgesia are unknown. Hypothalamic tanycytes are neural stem and progenitor cells, but little is known of how they are regulated. Here we provide evidence that the cell adhesion molecule, NrCAM, regulates tanycytes in the adult niche. NrCAM is strongly expressed in adult mouse tanycytes.

Multi-state outcome analysis of treatment interventions after failure of non-surgical root canal treatment: a 13-year retrospective study.

Objective: To examine the factors affecting the transitions through treatment interventions after failure of non-surgical root canal treatment (NS-RCT).

Methodology: Insurance enrollment and claim information for enrollees of Delta Dental of Wisconsin (DDWI), USA were analyzed for 438,487 initial NS-RCT procedures to determine the effect of initial provider type and other covariates on additional treatments (no additional treatment, nonsurgical retreatment, surgical retreatment and extraction). Alternative approaches to managing respiratory tract infections: a survey of public perceptions.

Background: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a common reason for people to consult in primary care, and contribute to antibiotic overuse and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Alternative approaches to supporting patients with RTIs may help, but it is important to understand public perceptions about these approaches before they are widely implemented.

Aim: To describe public perceptions regarding finger-prick testing, back-up antibiotic prescriptions (BUPs), and alternatives to traditional consultations for RTIs, and identify factors associated with favouring these approaches.

Effects of microstructure formation on the stability of vapor-deposited glasses.

Glasses formed by physical vapor deposition (PVD) are an interesting new class of materials, exhibiting properties thought to be equivalent to those of glasses aged for thousands of years. Efficacy of early passive tilting in minimizing ICU-acquired weakness: A randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: To investigate whether passive tilting added to a standardized rehabilitation therapy improved strength at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) discharge.

Material And Methods: This single-center trial included patients admitted to an adult surgical ICU and ventilated for at least 3 days. Patients were randomized to daily standardized rehabilitation therapy alone or with tilting on a table for at least 1 h.

Despite international advancements in gender equality across a variety of societal domains, the underrepresentation of girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields persists. In this study, we explored the possibility that the sex difference in mathematics anxiety contributes to this disparity. More specifically, we tested a number of predictions from the prominent gender stratification model, which is the leading psychological theory of cross-national patterns of sex differences in mathematics anxiety and performance.
