Purpose: Obstructive pyelonephritis is a common urologic emergency that requires prompt decompression of the collecting system. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed patient flow and healthcare strategies at numerous emergency departments across Brazil with still unknown consequences for the population. As the number of kidney transplants continues to rise, so does the number and complexities of surgical-related complications, which may be associated with increased morbidity and potentially graft loss. Ureteral stenosis, the most prevalent urological complication, may require diverse techniques for surgical correction depending on several recipient and graft abnormalities. Here we report the surgical and clinical outcomes of a 62-year-old man with a posttransplant pyeloureterostomy stricture successfully treated with ureterocalicostomy after a lower pole nephrectomy.

Introduction: It is generally advised to have a safety guidewire (SGW) present during ureteroscopy (URS) to manage possible complications. However, it increases the strenght needed to insert and retract the endoscope during the procedure, and, currently, there is a lack of solid data supporting the need for SGW in all procedures. We reviewed the literature about SGW utilization during URS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the effectiveness of flexible ureterorenoscopy (F-URS) using a holmium laser for treating kidney stones in patients with renal anomalies, like horseshoe kidney or rotation issues.
  • Data from 13 patients who underwent this procedure between April 2011 and April 2017 were reviewed, focusing on patient demographics, stone characteristics, surgical methods, and outcomes.
  • Results showed a high success rate, with 75% of patients being stone-free after 90 days, indicating that F-URS is a safe and effective option for these complex cases.

Materials And Methods: A total of 140 high-risk prostate cancer patients who were undergoing definitive treatment and who had clinically organ-confined disease and who suffered from biochemical recurrence were administered intravenous (IV) clodronate.

Context: Antibiotic prophylaxis in transurethral resection of the prostate is a regular practice in urology. However, its prophylactic effect can be questioned when the antiseptic surgical technique is used. Nonetheless, urine culture-oriented antibiotic therapy is the gold standard for avoiding improper medication usage and bacterial resistance.
