A scoping review of the reporting quality of reviews of commercially and publicly available mobile health apps.

Objectives: There is no guidance to support the reporting of systematic reviews of mobile health (mhealth) apps (app reviews), so authors attempt to use/modify the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). There is a need for reporting guidance, building on PRISMA where appropriate, tailored to app reviews. The objectives were to describe the reporting quality of published mHealth app reviews, identify the need for, and develop potential candidate items for a reporting guideline.

Total Prehospital Time and Tractor Injuries: A Nebraska State Trauma Registry Analysis.

Background: Agriculture is a hazardous industry, with tractor-related incidents being among the leading causes of traumatic injury and death. These injuries tend to take place far away from hospitals, thus leading to increased prehospital time to receive care. Understanding the relationship between prehospital time and outcomes such as hospital length of stay and mortality in the state of Nebraska could inform resource allocation for tractor related injuries.

Ethical bioprospecting and microbial assessments for sustainable solutions to the AMR crisis.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been declared one of the top 10 global public health challenges of our age by the World Health Organization, and the World Bank describes AMR as a crisis affecting the finance, health, and agriculture sectors and a major threat to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals. But what is AMR? It is a phenotype that evolves in microbes exposed to antimicrobial molecules and causes dangerous infections. This suggests that scientists and healthcare workers should be on the frontline in the search for sustainable solutions to AMR.

Experiences and Views of Older Adults of South Asian, Black African, and Caribbean Backgrounds About the Digitalization of Primary Care Services Since the COVID-19 Pandemic: Qualitative Focus Group Study.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022 prompted governments worldwide to enforce lockdowns and social restrictions, alongside the rapid adoption of digital health and care services. However, there are concerns about the potential exclusion of older adults, who face barriers to digital inclusion, such as age, socioeconomic status, literacy level, and ethnicity.

Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences of older adults from the 3 largest minoritized ethnic groups in England and Wales-people of South Asian, Black African, and Caribbean backgrounds-in the use of digitalized primary care services since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Considerations of equity in the development of tools that identify and respond to end-of-life carer support needs: a scoping review protocol.

Introduction: Informal caregivers are essential in supporting end-of-life patients at home but are often ill-prepared for the carer role. There is growing interest in the development of tools to assess caregiver support needs and a recognised need for a greater focus on addressing inequities in end-of-life care. We plan to undertake a scoping review of available literature to (1) identify and describe tools developed to assess the support needs of informal caregivers in end-of-life care; (2) report on any inequities and under-represented groups in tool development and use.

Resistance of Boron Nitride Nanotubes to Radiation-Induced Oxidation.

We present unprecedented results on the damage thresholds and pathways for boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) under the influence of energetic electrons in an oxidative gas environment, using an environmental aberration-corrected electron microscope over a range of oxygen pressures. We observe a damage cascade process that resists damage until a higher electron dose, compared with carbon nanotubes, initiating at defect-free BNNT sidewalls and proceeding through the conversion from crystalline nanotubes to amorphous boron nitride (BN), resisting oxidation throughout. We compare with prior results on the oxidation of carbon nanotubes and present a model that attributes the onset of damage in both cases to a physisorbed oxygen layer that reduces the threshold for damage onset.

The effectiveness and acceptability of physical activity interventions amongst older adults with lower socioeconomic status: a mixed methods systematic review.

Background: Older adults with lower socioeconomic status are less likely to be physically active than those with higher socioeconomic status. To inform future intervention development, this review explored: [i] how effective are physical activity interventions at increasing levels of physical activity amongst older adults with lower socioeconomic status?; [ii] what factors are associated with the acceptability of physical activity interventions amongst older adults with lower socioeconomic status?; [iii] what are the implications for developing physical activity interventions for older adults with lower socioeconomic status?

Methods: This mixed methods systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE, CENTRAL, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ASSIA and Sports Medicine and Education Index were searched up to May 2023, to identify quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods primary research studies measuring the effectiveness of and/or experiences of physical activity interventions for older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) with lower socioeconomic status.

Ion transport and ultra-efficient osmotic power generation in boron nitride nanotube porins.

Nanotube porins form transmembrane nanomaterial-derived scaffolds that mimic the geometry and functionality of biological membrane channels. We report synthesis, transport properties, and osmotic energy harvesting performance of another member of the nanotube porin family: boron nitride nanotube porins (BNNTPs). Cryo-transmission electron microscopy imaging, liposome transport assays, and DNA translocation experiments show that BNNTPs reconstitute into lipid membranes to form functional channels of ~2-nm diameter.

Frailty: a global health challenge in need of local action.

Frailty is a complex, age-related clinical condition that involves multiple contributing factors and raises the risk of adverse outcomes in older people. Given global population ageing trends, the growing prevalence and incidence of frailty pose significant challenges to health and social care systems in both high-income and lower-income countries. In this review, we highlight the disproportionate representation of research on frailty screening and management from high-income countries, despite how lower-income countries are projected to have a larger share of older people aged ≥60.

Introduction: Reviews of commercial and publicly available smartphone (mobile) health applications (mHealth app reviews) are being undertaken and published. However, there is variation in the conduct and reporting of mHealth app reviews, with no existing reporting guidelines. Building on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we aim to develop the Consensus for APP Review Reporting Items (CAPPRRI) guidance, to support the conduct and reporting of mHealth app reviews.

California's 2023 snow deluge: Contextualizing an extreme snow year against future climate change.

The increasing prevalence of low snow conditions in a warming climate has attracted substantial attention in recent years, but a focus exclusively on low snow leaves high snow years relatively underexplored. However, these large snow years are hydrologically and economically important in regions where snow is critical for water resources. Here, we introduce the term "snow deluge" and use anomalously high snowpack in California's Sierra Nevada during the 2023 water year as a case study.

Trial of Early Minimally Invasive Removal of Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

Background: Trials of surgical evacuation of supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhages have generally shown no functional benefit. Whether early minimally invasive surgical removal would result in better outcomes than medical management is not known.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized trial involving patients with an acute intracerebral hemorrhage, we assessed surgical removal of the hematoma as compared with medical management.

Many social, cultural, and economic activities (appointments, ticket bookings, tax and utility payments, shopping, etc) have transitioned to web-based platforms.

Objective: Falls are a common cause of potentially preventable death, disability and loss of independence with an annual estimated cost of £4.4bn. People living with dementia (PlwD) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have an increased fall risk.

Transitional Care Interventions From Hospital to Community to Reduce Health Care Use and Improve Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis.

Importance: Discharge from the hospital to the community has been associated with serious patient risks and excess service costs.

Objective: To evaluate the comparative effectiveness associated with transitional care interventions with different complexity levels at improving health care utilization and patient outcomes in the transition from the hospital to the community.

Identifying Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk Using the STOP-BANG Questionnaire in a Cardiology Clinic.

Untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, warranting enhanced awareness, screening, and action among healthcare providers to optimize patient outcomes. Attempting to address the potential under detection of OSA, this quality improvement project implemented the STOP-Bang Sleep Apnea Questionnaire at a cardiology clinic, with the goals to stratify risk for OSA in 100% of patients and increase provider referral of high risk patients for sleep studies. The setting was an outpatient cardiology clinic in Pensacola, Florida.

Clinical antibiotic-resistance plasmids have small effects on biofilm formation and population growth in Escherichia coli in vitro.

Antimicrobial resistance (AR) mechanisms encoded on plasmids can affect other phenotypic traits in bacteria, including biofilm formation. These effects may be important contributors to the spread of AR and the evolutionary success of plasmids, but it is not yet clear how common such effects are for clinical plasmids/bacteria, and how they vary among different plasmids and host strains. Here, we used a combinatorial approach to test the effects of clinical AR plasmids on biofilm formation and population growth in clinical and laboratory Escherichia coli strains.

Integrated Fluorescence Microscopy (iFLM) for Cryo-FIB-milling and In-situ Cryo-ET.

Correlative cryo-FLM-FIB milling is a powerful sample preparation technique for cryo-ET. However, correlative workflows that incorporate precise targeting remain challenging. Here, we demonstrate the development and use of an integrated Fluorescence Light Microscope (iFLM) module within a cryo-FIB-SEM to enable a coordinate-based two-point 3D correlative workflow.
