Aims: The Stent for Life initiative aims at the reduction of mortality in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction by enhancing timely access to primary percutaneous coronary intervention. To assess the associated health and socioeconomic impact, the Stent for Life economic project was launched and applied to four model regions: Romania, Portugal, the Basque Country in Spain, and the Kemerovo region in the Russian Federation.

Methods And Results: The Stent for Life economic model is based on a decision tree that incorporates primary percutaneous coronary intervention rates and mortality.

The chiral spiroborate anions [B (Sal)] and [B (Sal)], ( and subscripts indicate boron stereochemistry) have been isolated as 1 : 1 quininium and 1 : 2 sparteinium salts, [HQuin][B (Sal)] and [HSpa][B (Sal)] respectively, by either cation metathesis or a simple one-pot synthesis involving reaction of boric and salicylic acids with the alkaloid base. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy shows that the B-based chirality is stable in polar aprotic media, such as DMF or DMSO, though labile in protic solutions. Enantiopure salts with achiral counter-cations such as [NBu][B (Sal)] may then be prepared by exchange, so these B-chiral anions may have use in metathesis-based resolutions.

Bis(mandelato)borate [B(Man)2](-) (R- or S-) anions are simply prepared and appear widely effective for resolution of racemic cations. Three examples demonstrate their scope; the alkaloid tetrahydropalmatine (THP), 1,2-diaminopropane (1,2-dap) and the metal-organic complex [Co(phen)3](3+) are readily resolved, either by a facile one-pot procedure, or via counter-ion metathesis.

Background: We evaluated the role of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for patients with inoperable squamous esophageal cancer.

Methods: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic squamous esophageal carcinoma who received CRT were recruited. The CRT consists of continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil at 200 mg/m(2)/day, and cisplatin at 60 mg/m(2) on days 1 and 22, with concurrent radiotherapy for a total of 50 to 60 Gy in 25 to 30 fractions over 6 weeks.

Objective: We conducted a prospective double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized trial to investigate the effect of ketorolac trometamol (KT) administered intravenously as premedication in colonoscopy.

Methods: One hundred and forty patients undergoing colonoscopy were randomized to receive either 60 mg of KT (KT group (KTG), n=70) or placebo (normal saline group (NSG), n=70) intravenously as premedication 30 min prior to procedure. Patient-controlled sedation (PCS) was used as the mode of sedation.

We conducted a prospective randomized trial to compare the efficacy and survival outcome by chemoradiation with that by esophagectomy as a curative treatment. From July 2000 to December 2004, 80 patients with potentially resectable squamous cell carcinoma of the mid or lower thoracic esophagus were randomized to esophagectomy or chemoradiotherapy. A two- or three-stage esophagectomy with two-field dissection was performed.
