: High-flow nasal therapy (HFNT) has been shown to reduce exacerbations of COPD and some evidence displays benefits in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) patients. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 12 months of home HFNT on the annual exacerbation rate between mild/moderate and severe NCFB patients, classified by the bronchiectasis severity index (BSI). Secondary outcomes were the evaluation of the dyspnea, pulmonary function, and sputum cultures in both groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated airway dysfunction risk in individuals with a specific genetic variant (PI*MR) of the SERPINA-1 gene, comparing them to other variants (PI*MZ and PI*MS).
  • Out of 60 participants, PI*MR and PI*MZ groups showed a significantly greater decline in lung function (FEV) over one year compared to the PI*MS group.
  • Smokers in the PI*MR group had notably worse respiratory function at baseline and a faster decline in lung function over time, indicating that these patients require closer monitoring, especially if they have COPD.
