- The study investigated continuous-flow hydrogen production using the microorganism Thermotoga neapolitana while varying the hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 24 to 5 hours.
- When the HRT was decreased, the hydrogen yield initially dropped but eventually recovered with longer cultivation times, yielding lower hydrogen at reduced HRTs.
- The hydrogen production rate and liquid hydrogen concentration increased with lower HRT, and recirculating hydrogen-rich biogas helped optimize glucose consumption and maximize hydrogen production rate at the shortest HRT.
