Introduction: High-dose melphalan (HDMel) is the most common conditioning chemotherapy regimen for autologous stem cell transplantation (SCT) in patients affected by multiple myeloma (MM). No consensus exists for the emetogenicity or prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in this regimen.

Methods: Data on the incidence and efficacy/safety of CINV prophylaxis among patients affected by MM undergoing autologous SCT with the HDMel regimen was extracted from electronic databases and analyzed.

The management of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) during pregnancy has become recently a matter of continuous debate. The introduction of the Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) in clinical practice has dramatically changed the prognosis of CML patients; in fact, patients diagnosed in chronic phase can reasonably expect many years of excellent disease control and good quality of life, as well as a normal life expectancy, including the necessity to address issues relating to fertility and pregnancy. Physicians are frequently being asked for advice regarding the need for, and/or the appropriateness of, stopping treatment in order to conceive.

Background: membranous glomerulopathy (MG) is an immunomediated disorder which accounts for the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome (NS) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).

Objective And Methods: to provide an update on the issue by reviewing pertinent literature on the MEDLINE database.

Results: sixty-nine post allogenic HSCT patients (42 male) with MG were identified.

Background: Rituximab in sequential combination with fludarabine (Flu) allowed patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) to achieve higher remission rates and longer response duration. Based on their recent experience in indolent non-Hodgkin lymphomas, in this study, the authors attempted to demonstrate whether consolidation/maintenance therapy with rituximab could prolong the response duration in this patient population.

Methods: This Phase II study was based on a consolidation/maintenance therapy with rituximab for patients in complete remission (CR) or partial remission (PR) who were positive for minimal residual disease (MRD), as determined by flow cytometry.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) outbreak is a significant cause of morbidity in patients suffering from blood-related malignancies, occurring mostly among those affected by lymphoproliferative disorders and in those receiving haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. The elucidated pathological mechanisms of VZV-related painful complications have provided the rationale for acute zoster pain (AZP) and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) treatment with antiviral therapy combined with neuroactive agents, such as tricyclic or anticonvulsant agents. The role of opioids in this setting is less clearly established.
