- Cardiac stromal cells (CSCs) are key players in cardiac fibrosis and are significantly affected by metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), which worsen their fibrotic behavior.
- The study involved isolating CSCs from patients with MetS and DM2, and treating them with specific pharmacological agents (trehalose and NOX4/NOX5 inhibitors) to improve their function by modulating oxidative stress and autophagy.
- Results showed that CSCs from patients had increased markers for fibrosis and reduced ability to support blood vessel formation, but treatment with the agents improved their characteristics and secreted factors, ultimately enhancing their ability to support endothelial cells and counteract pathological conditions.
Purpose Of Review: Cardiac regenerative medicine is a field bridging together biotechnology and surgical science. In this review, we present the explored surgical roads to cell delivery and the known effects of each delivery method on cell therapy efficiency. We also list the more recent clinical trials, exploring the safety and efficacy of delivery routes used for cardiac cell therapy approaches.
