Background: The study of recognized occupational diseases trend is important to understand the preventive approach needed in the future, however, while numbers of occupational diseases are available on web, data on incidence are missing. The aim of our study was to analyze the trend and the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of recognized occupational diseases in Italy, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia region (FVG) and Liguria region from 2010 to 2021.

Methods: Numbers of recognized occupational diseases by the Italian National Insurance for Occupational Diseases (INAIL) were analyzed and incidence were calculated considered the total number of workforces in the area.

In the Adriatic Sea, the European Union supported a cross-border cooperation research program, during which digital spatial data on shellfish production and relaying areas, regulated conditions on fishing activities, protected areas and restocking structures, administrative boundaries and sea bottom characteristics, were collated from digital repositories in various institutions and paper documents. A web-based geographical information system was developed to share data of the sea facing the Abruzzi region and to explore the spatial distribution of marine resources and maritime activities, thus focussing and facilitating fisheries management and providing a potential support to the regional planning of resource exploitation.

Veterinary training plays a crucial role in increasing effectiveness of veterinary response to epidemic and non-epidemic emergencies. Being able to assess learning needs and to deliver training is acknowledged as a strategic priority in veterinary public health activities. The validation of an e-learning system that is able to respond to the urgent needs of veterinary professionals to ensure the despatch of rapid teaching methods on emerging and re-emerging animal diseases and zoonoses was the core of a research project developed in the Mediterranean Basin between 2005 and 2009.

The success of emergency intervention to control contagious animal diseases is dependent on the preparedness of veterinary services. In the framework of avian influenza preparedness, the Italian Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the National Reference Centers for Epidemiology and Avian Influenza, implemented an electronic learning course using new web-based information and communication technologies. The course was designed to train veterinary officers involved in disease outbreak management, laboratory diagnosis, and policy making.

In Italy, requests for advanced training in veterinary public health are increasing, both quantitatively and qualitatively; traditional training models are inadequate to satisfy demand. The integration of the new information and communication technologies with interactive learning methods favoured the development of advanced and innovative web-based learning solutions. The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise (IZS A&M), centre for advanced training in veterinary public health, is changing its offer, moving from traditional models to the new solutions offered by e-learning.

To evaluate whether residential radon exposure explains the excess mortality for lung cancer in an Italian alpine valley with high natural radioactivity, the authors conducted a population-based case-control study on 138 deceased cases and 291 sex- and year-of-birth-matched controls. Year-long alpha-track measurements of radon were performed in the most recent residence, and information about occupational history and lifetime smoking habits was obtained. The authors adjusted for smoking, and radon was associated with lung cancer risk among men: compared with a radon level of < 40 becquerels (Bq) per cubic meter (m3), the odds ratios for 40-76 Bq/m3, 77-139 Bq/m3, 140-199 Bq/m3, and 200+ Bq/m3 were 2.

Objectives: To investigate the occurrence of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) and the cold response of digital vessels in a group of 68 forestry workers who underwent a first clinical examination in 1990 and were then reexamined in 1995.

Methods: The forestry workers were divided into three groups: group A (n = 27), active workers who did not have VWF in 1990 and continued to use chain saws; group B (n = 29), workers who did not have VWF in 1990 and retired before 1995; and group C (n = 12), active or retired workers who had VWF in 1990. The subjects underwent a medical interview, a complete physical examination, and a cold provocation test, which were performed by the same physicians at both surveys.
