Although females run greater risk for affective disorders, the greater vulnerability of women for these disorders varies with the age. The present study evaluates the lifetime incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders by age and gender in a community sample (2363 subjects; 54.6% females), representative of the general population (Sesto Fiorentino Study).

Background: Although life events have been consistently reported as precipitating factors for most psychiatric disorders, there is no comprehensive investigation of the relationship between severe life events and psychiatric disorders in the general population.

Methods: This is a community-based study of psychiatric disorders among a cohort representative of adults in an Italian town. A total of 2,363 subjects out of 2,500 selected to be representative of the population living in Sesto Fiorentino, central Italy, were interviewed by their own general practitioner using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview.

Objective: To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) using the Short Form 36 (SF-36) and to correlate SF-36 scores with clinical and biologic markers.

Methods: The SF-36 was administered to 24 controls and 24 SSc patients. SSc patients also were evaluated for subset (limited SSc [lSSc] and diffuse SSc [dSSc]), age, disease duration, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) levels, autoantibodies, and skin and internal organ involvement.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Alessandra Scarpato"

  • - Alessandra Scarpato's research focuses on psychiatric disorders, particularly examining how variables like age, gender, and life events impact the prevalence and manifestation of these conditions in community populations, as reflected in the Sesto Fiorentino Study.
  • - Her studies reveal significant gender differences in the incidence of depression and anxiety, indicating that women's vulnerability changes with age, and emphasize the importance of understanding life events as triggers for psychiatric disorders.
  • - Scarpato also investigates the health-related quality of life in patients with systemic sclerosis, highlighting correlations between quality of life (measured by SF-36) and various clinical and biological markers, contributing to a broader understanding of chronic disease impact on mental health.
