Impaired lipid metabolism is a pivotal driver of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this regard, the accumulation of ceramides within the circulation as well as in metabolically active tissues and atherosclerotic plaques is a direct consequence of derailed lipid metabolism. Ceramides may be at the nexus between impaired lipid metabolism and CVD.
