Freshwater decapod crustaceans from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil: species composition and distribution.

Brazil contains about 5% (~120 spp.) of the total known species of freshwater decapods. Information on the occurrence of freshwater decapod species in the state of Minas Gerais is dispersed and much of this remains unpublished.

The genus Hyalella Smith, 1874 occurs exclusively in the Americas. In Brazil, the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul have the largest number of records with 20 species. This paper presents two new species for the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

In this study, three new species of Hyalella (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Hyalellidae) are described based on specimens collected in wetlands located in three freshwater ecoregions (Southeastern Mata Atlântica, Tramandaí-Mampituba and Laguna dos Patos) of the southern Brazilian Coastal Plain (states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina). Hyalella minuana n. sp.

A new species of (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Hyalellidae) from Itatiaia National Park, Brazil: an epigean freshwater amphipod with troglobiotic traits at 2,200 meters of altitude.

A new species of the freshwater amphipod Hyalella Smith, 1874 is described for the plateau of the Itatiaia National Park, located between the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. This is the first Brazilian species of Hyalella found at more than 2,200 meters of altitude. The specimens were found in a small stream, buried under rocks, in the higher area of the Park.

Most of known troglobiotic species occur in caves and subterranean environments from great depths. However, recently more attention has been given to other subterranean environments, such as the hypothelminorheic habitats. It comprises the most superficial among all subterranean habitats.
