This paper presented the preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties of Brazil nut shell activated carbon for catechol removal from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium adsorption of catechol molecules on this activated was experimentally quantified at pH 6 and temperatures ranging from 25 to 55 °C, and at 25 °C and pH ranging from 6 to 10. These results were utilized to elucidate the role of surface functionalities through statistical physics calculations.

Article Synopsis
  • - Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is a sedative used for critically ill COVID-19 patients due to its benefits like reduced respiratory depression and potential anti-inflammatory effects, prompting a study on its safety and efficacy in this context.
  • - In a study involving 155 ICU patients with COVID-19 who did not need invasive ventilation, DEX did not significantly reduce the incidence of respiratory failure, but those receiving DEX had a statistically shorter time until they required mechanical ventilation.
  • - Outcomes related to ICU and hospital stays, as well as mortality rates within 30 days, showed no significant differences between DEX users and the control group, indicating the need for further studies to explore DEX's effects.

  • - Saudi Arabia is facing a rise in chronic diseases and disabilities, leading to a study on the prevalence of multiple long-term chronic conditions (MLTCs) and disabilities among adults aged 50 and older in Riyadh.
  • - The study found that 49.4% of participants had MLTCs, and 33.6% to 49.7% reported disabilities, with these rates significantly higher in those with MLTCs (42.5% to 58.1%).
  • - There is a strong association between MLTCs and disabilities, indicating that addressing chronic diseases could also alleviate disabilities among older Saudi adults.

Background: Clinical guidelines emphasize the use of standardized outcome measures (SOMs) in post-stroke rehabilitation. However, the extent of SOM utilization among physiotherapists in this context in Saudi Arabia remains unclear.

Aim: 1) assess the current use of SOMs by physiotherapists involved in stroke rehabilitation in Saudi Arabia and 2) identify facilitators and barriers influencing the use of SOMs.

  • This study investigated how often children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and what factors might be related to those symptoms.
  • It included a total of 146 children with ASD and 114 typically developing children, using a questionnaire to gather data on demographics, nutrition, and GI health over the past six months.
  • Results showed that children with ASD reported more GI issues like constipation and diarrhea, and factors such as family history of ASD and maternal education levels were linked to these symptoms.

: The aim was to investigate the association between baseline coexistence of hypertension (HTN) and arthritis, HTN alone, or arthritis alone, and their impact on longitudinal physical function measures among community-dwelling older adults over 5 years of follow-up. : Ours was a longitudinal prospective cohort study from the second wave (2010-2011) and third wave (2015-2016) of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP). Data for older adults were used.

Our objectives were to examine the association between balance confidence, functional mobility measures, and the presence of disability in older adults in Saudi Arabia and to identify the optimal cutoff scores for these measures that predict disability. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 324 community-dwelling older adults (65 ± 7 years, 59% women). Disability was assessed using the Arabic version of the basic activities of daily living (ADLs) scale.

Background: Across the world, many systems have implemented extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) as a potential treatment strategy for patients in refractory cardiac arrest. To date, there are no universally accepted criteria for patient selection for ECPR. We conducted a systematic review to explore the variability in patient eligibility criteria for ECPR across systems.

Context: In this comparative study of the adsorption of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) on two modified low-activated carbons (ACK and ACZ) at four temperatures (293-313 K), steric and energetic characteristics of adsorption were investigated. An advanced statistical physics multilayer model involving single-layer and double-layer adsorption scenarios was developed to interpret the L-Phe adsorption phenomenon. Modeling results indicate that two and three L-Phe layers were arranged depending on the tested adsorption systems.

  • Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare genetic skin condition that makes individuals more susceptible to certain HPV types and increases their risk of skin cancer.
  • A case study of a 22-year-old male showed typical symptoms of EV, such as flat red bumps on the skin, and a biopsy revealed distinct histological features without signs of cancer.
  • Early diagnosis and ongoing management, including genetic counseling, sun protection, and monitoring for suspicious skin changes, are crucial for those with EV to prevent malignant growths.

C photosynthesis is a complex trait requiring multiple developmental and metabolic alterations. Despite this complexity, it has independently evolved over 60 times. However, our understanding of the transition to C is complicated by the fact that variation in photosynthetic type is usually segregated between species that diverged a long time ago.
