An important issue in obtaining a good casting surface without defects in contact with the liquid metal is the use of protective coatings on the surface of the moulding sand forming the mould cavity. In the production of castings, residual stresses arise in the cooling process, the level of which is often unknown. Their significance in engineering practice is very important because they are superposed on the stresses from the service load and are often the primary cause of material failure leading to failure of the equipment or structure.
