The endogenous reduction of nitrite to nitrosyl is drawing increasing attention as a protective mechanism against hypoxic injury in mammalian physiology and as an alternative source of NO, which is involved in a wide variety of biological activities. Thus, chemical mechanisms for this transformation, which are mediated by metallo proteins, are of considerable interest. The study described here examines the reactions of the biomimetic models Co(TTP)(NO) (TTP = meso-tetratolylporphyrinato dianion) and Mn(TPP)(ONO) (TPP = meso-tetraphenyl-porphyrinato dianion) in sublimated solid films with hydrogen sulfide (HS) and with ethanethiol (EtSH) at various temperatures from 77 K to room temperature using in situ infrared and optical spectroscopy.

In this paper we propose a new strategy towards simultaneous co- and cross-polarized measurements of Raman spectra in a confocal microscope. One of the advantages of this strategy is that it is immune to polarization-dependent efficiency of diffraction gratings. It is shown via linear angle-resolved and circular polarization measurements that the accuracy of these snapshot polarization measurements on solid and liquid samples are in good agreement with available models and data.

We experimentally study the propagating of an optical intensity jump discontinuity in a nonlocal stochastic Kerr focusing nematic liquid crystal cell. We show both theoretically and experimentally that nonlocality opens a route towards beam steering in our system. Single-molecule localization microscopy has become a prominent approach to study structural and dynamic arrangements of nanometric objects well beyond the diffraction limit. To maximize localization precision, high numerical aperture objectives must be used; however, this inherently strongly limits the depth-of-field (DoF) of the microscope images. We propose the development of a high-contrast imaging technique enabling the simultaneous and selective nulling of several light sources. This is done by realizing a reconfigurable multiple-vortex phase mask made of a liquid crystal thin film on which local topological features can be addressed electro-optically. We report on a self-induced strategy to achieve high-contrast optical imaging, without the need for any man-made optical masks, which relies on the self-induced spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion phenomenon. This is experimentally demonstrated by realizing a laboratory demonstration of self-eclipsing of a light source following the generation of a self-adapted vectorial optical vortex transmission mask. The proposed concept, namely the realization of an alignment-free optical vortex coronagraph, may inspire the development of future generations of smart astronomical imaging instruments.
