View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn the current study, we first established that chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) have significant anti-fibrillogenic and fibril-destabilising effects on bovine insulin in vitro that proportionally expand with concentration growth. The obtained data were supported by the Thioflavin T (ThT) assay, circular dichroism (CD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Interestingly, coincubation of insulin with COS in the ratio of 1 to 10 over 48 h at 37 °C leads to full prevention of insulin aggregation, and in the case of preformed fibrils, results in their destabilisation and disaggregation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAbility of high molecular weight (HMW) κ- and λ-carrageenans of the red marine algae Chondrus armatus and their low molecular weight degradation products (LMWDPs) (0.7-20 and 10-170 kDa respectively) to influence functional properties (motility and phagocytosis) of murine peritoneal macrophages was assessed in this study as an in vitro and a weeklong feeding experiment. We demonstrated that, with an exception of one, all carrageenan samples at 100 μg/ml increased cellular motility and dose-dependently decreased phagocytic activity; LMWDPs of λ-carrageenan suppressed motility and had no effect on phagocytosis.

We developed an optimal model for classifying bivalve and immune cells, based on evaluating their linear and non-linear morphological features: size characteristics (area, perimeter), various parameters of cell bounding circle, convex hull, cell symmetry, roundness, and a number of fractal dimensions and lacunarities evaluating the spatial complexity of cells. Proposed classification model is based on Ward's clustering method, loaded with highest multimodality index factors.
