Article Synopsis
  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is essential for ensuring patient safety during scoliosis surgery by monitoring spinal cord and nerve function through motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), with anesthesia type affecting the accuracy of these signals.
  • A systematic review was carried out, analyzing studies from major medical databases, which evaluated the impact of various anesthetic techniques on neuromonitoring during scoliosis procedures, narrowing down from 998 articles to 45 for detailed analysis.
  • The findings suggest that the Erector Spinae Plane Block (ESPB) offers significant advantages over traditional spinal and epidural anesthesia by improving neuromonitoring accuracy, reducing complications, and providing effective pain management, leading to better patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effects of a pain management technique involving the iPACK block combined with the ACB in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, focusing on pain relief and recovery.
  • The research included 366 participants, comparing outcomes such as pain scores, opioid use, functional recovery, and stress response indicators (NLR and PLR) between a sham group and the treatment group.
  • Results showed significant improvements in pain relief, reduced opioid consumption, better functional recovery, and lower stress response levels in the iPACK + ACB group, suggesting its effective role in postoperative care.

Background: In fatal cases of meningococcal septicemia, bacteriological diagnosis may not be straightforward due to postmortem replication and relocation of endogenic microflora. In medicolegal practice, aside from routine autopsy and histopathology, also other diagnostic methods, such as microbiological tests, immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are used to examine body fluids and tissues.

Case Summary: We present the case of sudden death in a 2-year-old child.

The authors present the type and extent of injuries inflicted as a result of the victims wearing fastened seat belts during frontal impacts of the vehicles. As an example of a particular traffic accident, the authors describe a rare case of neck injuries resulting from improper fitting of the safety belt to the victim's height. The driver of the car that had frontally hit the obstacle was killed on the spot, while the female passenger, was taken to hospital in a severe condition, where she died several hours later.
