This review summarizes the evidence of therapy for primary and secondary prevention of bleeding from oesophageal varices and treatment of acute bleeding. Continuing advances in the knowledge of portal hypertension have led to a reduction in primary and secondary bleeding episodes from oesophageal varices and a reduction in mortality from acute bleeding.
