Importance: With the increasing legislation restricting health care access for transgender and nonbinary (trans) populations in recent years, there has been limited research on how awareness of and concerns about legislative restrictions and protections influence mental health outcomes.

Objective: To examine whether awareness of and concerns about the current policy environment regarding trans individuals are associated with depression and anxiety symptoms among trans adults.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This study uses cross-sectional data collected between March and April 2023 from the Washington Priority Assessment in Trans Health (PATH) Project, an online study designed by, with, and for trans communities.

Article Synopsis
  • - Transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) individuals face a higher risk of HIV but are often overlooked in research and public health efforts.
  • - A study aimed to include TGNB participants and accurately assess their sexual activity and partners to evaluate HIV risk, while making the survey process less burdensome for them.
  • - The adaptation of survey questions for cisgender men to include TGNB individuals was manageable, but more work is needed to enhance inclusivity and encourage TGNB participation in research.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake has been slow in this group. It is important to understand perceptions about PrEP and barriers to its use among MSM/TG who use methamphetamine to reduce new HIV infections.

Unlabelled: Background Cisgender men and transgender individuals who have sex with men (MSM/TG) and use methamphetamine are at elevated risk for HIV and have had limited pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake. The aim of this study was to quantify the knowledge and use of PrEP, identify barriers to PrEP use, and develop a targeted educational campaign to promote PrEP among MSM/TG who use methamphetamine.

Methods: We conducted three consultations with peer educators of Project Needle and Sex Education Outreach Network (NEON) to develop and disseminate educational materials.
