Systemic Bevacizumab for Treatment of Respiratory Papillomatosis: International Consensus Statement.

Objectives/hypothesis: The purpose of this study is to develop consensus on key points that would support the use of systemic bevacizumab for the treatment of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), and to provide preliminary guidance surrounding the use of this treatment modality.

Study Design: Delphi method-based survey series.

Methods: A multidisciplinary, multi-institutional panel of physicians with experience using systemic bevacizumab for the treatment of RRP was established.

Osteosarcoma of the jaw in children and young adults.

Background: Pediatric jaw osteosarcoma is uncommon, and data are scarce regarding clinical presentation, prognostic factors, and outcome.

Methods: A single-institution medical record review from 1983 to 2008 for 12 patients age ≤ 21 years was undertaken for this study.

Results: Median diagnosis age was 16.

Targeting glycolysis in leukemia: a novel inhibitor 3-BrOP in combination with rapamycin.

Rapidly proliferating solid tumor cells are often dependent on glycolysis for ATP production even in normoxia (the Warburg effect), however it is not yet clear whether acute leukemias have a similarly increased dependence on aerobic glycolysis. We report that all acute leukemia subtypes (pre-B ALL, T-ALL and AML) demonstrated growth arrest and cell death when treated the novel glycolysis inhibitor 3-BrOP. Potentiated ATP depletion and pro-apoptotic effects were seen for 3-BrOP combinations with the cytochrome-c-reductase inhibitor antimycin A and the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin.

The combination of the novel glycolysis inhibitor 3-BrOP and rapamycin is effective against neuroblastoma.

Children with high-risk and recurrent neuroblastoma have poor survival rates, and novel therapies are needed. Many cancer cells have been found to preferentially employ the glycolytic pathway for energy generation, even in the presence of oxygen. 3-BrOP is a novel inhibitor of glycolysis, and has demonstrated efficacy against a wide range of tumor types.

Prognostic significance of early lymphocyte recovery in pediatric osteosarcoma.

Background: Evidence suggests early lymphocyte recovery after chemotherapy predicts superior outcome for patients with cancer, a phenomenon not previously investigated in osteosarcoma. This study determined the prognostic significance of early lymphocyte recovery for pediatric patients with osteosarcoma.

Procedures: We reviewed data of 19 consecutive patients treated for osteosarcoma at our institution from 1997 to 2007.

Enhanced resting activity of the oral somatosensory cortex in obese subjects.

The cerebral mechanisms underlying excess food intake in obese subjects are poorly understood. We used PET and 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose to assess differences in regional brain metabolism between obese and lean subjects at rest. Brain metabolic images were analyzed using statistical parameter maps.
