Polymeric micro- and nanoparticles are useful vehicles for delivering cytokines to diseased tissues such as solid tumors. Double emulsion solvent evaporation is one of the most common techniques to formulate cytokines into vehicles made from hydrophobic polymers; however, the liquid-liquid interfaces formed during emulsification can greatly affect the stability and therapeutic performance of encapsulated cytokines. To develop more effective cytokine-delivery systems, a clear molecular understanding of the interactions between relevant proteins and solvents used in the preparation of such particles is needed.

Resisted sprint (RS) training, such as sled or parachute towing, is commonly used for sprint training among field sport athletes. While RS training is frequently employed by athletes and coaches, there is little research on its benefits, especially compared to unresisted running (UR) training programs with similar training volumes. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the effectiveness of RS training on acceleration compared to UR training.

Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) is a virtual reality (VR) environment that has not been fully studied due to its high cost and complexity in system integration. Previous CAVE-related studies mainly focused on comparing its effectiveness with other learning media, such as textbooks, desktop VR, or head-mounted display (HMD) VR. In this study, through the utilization of CAVE in a meteorology class, we concentrated on CAVE itself, measured how CAVE impacted learners' learning outcomes before and after using CAVE in an actual ongoing undergraduate-level class, and investigated how learners perceived their learning experiences.

Downregulation of intercellular communication through suppression of gap junctional conductance is necessary during wound healing. Connexin 43 (Cx43), a prominent gap junction protein in skin, is downregulated following wounding to restrict communication between keratinocytes. Previous studies found that PKCμ, a novel PKC isozyme, regulates efficient cutaneous wound healing.

Polar bears () face a number of challenges that threaten the survival of the species. Captive breeding represents one essential facet of species conservation, but aspects of the polar bear's reproductive physiology, such as follicle maturation, coitus-induced ovulation, and pseudopregnancy, are poorly characterized and present challenges for enhancing natural reproductive success and the application of advanced reproductive techniques. Due to the absence of a reliable transrectal or transabdominal ultrasound method for ovarian examination in the species, the ovaries of two adult female polar bears were examined laparoscopically to evaluate the feasibility of surgical access to the ovaries, oviduct, and uterus.

Introduction: In Uganda and Zambia, both supply- and demand-side factors hamper availability of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), including implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs), at public sector facilities. This paper discusses results of a program aimed at increasing access to and uptake of LARC services in public sector facilities through capacity building of government health workers, strengthening government supply chains, and client mobilization.

Methods: From 2018-2021, the Ministries of Health (MOHs) in Uganda and Zambia and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) worked to increase readiness to provide LARC services within 51 focal facilities in Uganda and 85 focal facilities in Zambia.

Background: Since 2004, malaria transmission on Bioko Island has declined significantly as a result of the scaling-up of control interventions. The aim of eliminating malaria from the Island remains elusive, however, underscoring the need to adapt control to the local context. Understanding the factors driving the risk of malaria infection is critical to inform optimal suits of interventions in this adaptive approach.

Public health interventions require evidence-based decision-making to maximize impact. Spatial decision support systems (SDSS) are designed to collect, store, process and analyze data to generate knowledge and inform decisions. This paper discusses how the use of a SDSS, the Campaign Information Management System (CIMS), to support malaria control operations on Bioko Island has impacted key process indicators of indoor residual spraying (IRS): coverage, operational efficiency and productivity.

Background: Patients undergoing vaginal hysterectomy with native tissue pelvic reconstruction typically have low pain levels overall in the postoperative period. Notwithstanding, pain control immediately after surgery may be more challenging and a barrier to same-day discharge. Intrarectal diazepam has been used for acute and chronic pelvic pain and has a pharmacokinetic profile ideal for intermittent use.

The paracrine signaling, immunogenic properties and possible applications of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) for cartilage tissue engineering and regenerative medicine therapies have been investigated through numerous in vitro, animal model and clinical studies. The emerging knowledge largely supports the concept of MSCs as signaling and modulatory cells, exerting their influence through trophic and immune mediation rather than as a cell replacement therapy. The virtues of allogeneic cells as a ready-to-use product with well-defined characteristics of cell surface marker expression, proliferative ability, and differentiation capacity are well established.
