Background: The relationship between n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is unclear. Blood n-3 PUFA concentration is a biomarker of dietary n-3 PUFA intake. We examined the relationship between plasma n-3 PUFA concentrations and CRC risk in UK Biobank (UKBB) participants.

Background: Cardiac catheterization via the transfemoral approach can be associated with access site bleeding complications such as inguinal hematoma, pseudoaneurysm, arteriovenous fistula and retroperitoneal hematoma. Scrotal hematoma is a rare presentation of bleeding complications after transfemoral cardiac catheterization. We report a case of this rare complication.

Observational evidence linking dietary -3 PUFA intake and health outcomes is limited by a lack of robust validation of dietary intake using blood -3 PUFA levels and potential confounding by fish oil supplement (FOS) use. We investigated the relationship between oily fish intake, FOS use and plasma -3 PUFA levels in 121 650 UK Biobank (UKBB) participants. Ordinal logistic regression models, adjusted for clinical and lifestyle factors, were used to quantify the contribution of dietary oily fish intake and FOS use to plasma -3 PUFA levels (measured by NMR spectroscopy).

Data from experimental studies have demonstrated that marine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (O3FAs) have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. In the last decade, large-scale randomised controlled trials of pharmacological delivery of O3FAs and prospective cohort studies of dietary O3FA intake have continued to investigate the relationship between O3FA intake and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk and mortality. Clinical data suggest that O3FAs have differential anti-CRC activity depending on several host factors (including pretreatment blood O3FA level, ethnicity and systemic inflammatory response) and tumour characteristics (including location in the colorectum, histological phenotype (eg, conventional adenoma or serrated polyp) and molecular features (eg, microsatellite instability, cyclooxygenase expression)).

An operation note is a medicolegal document. The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) of England's Good Surgical Practice 2014 (GSP) sets out 19 points an operation note should include. This study aimed to assess if the introduction of an electronic patient record (EPR) improved the quality of general surgical operation notes.

Background: The transradial approach (TRA) has already become popular worldwide, but only recently has gained acceptance among Iraqi interventional cardiologists. The aim of this study is to document single operator experience with TRA and to test the benefit of assessing dual hand circulation before the TRA. It was an observational prospective study.

Background: Approximately 20% of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer will present with left-sided large bowel obstruction. The optimal management of this cohort of patients remains unclear. We aimed to review international guidelines to see if there was a consensus on the treatment of this surgical emergency.

Colonic complications following pancreatitis are unusual events ranging from 1% to 15%. In a patient with a hostile abdomen and multiple previous laparotomies, surgical management of a closed-loop large-bowel obstruction risks significant morbidity and mortality for the patient, necessitating other strategies for management. Caecostomy in the management of large bowel obstruction is an often forgotten weapon in the general surgeons' armoury.

Background Coronary artery perforation is a rare but serious complication of percutaneous coronary interventions. We aimed to evaluate the management of coronary artery perforation in Sulaimaniyah, Iraq. Methods A retrospective review of our medical records from 2009 to 2016 identified 24 patients (15 males, 9 females) with coronary artery perforation.

Injuries to the hypoglossal and vagus nerves are the most commonly reported injuries during carotid endarterectomy. While unilateral single nerve injury is usually well tolerated, bilateral or combined nerve injuries can pose a serious threat to life. This study aims to increase awareness of the inferior pharyngeal vein, which usually passes posterior to the internal carotid artery but sometimes crosses anterior to it.
