Modified Graham Patch Repair of Small Bowel Anastomotic Leak.

The modified Graham patch repair is a well-established technique for management of perforating foregut injuries, often learned by surgeons during general surgery training. There is, however, little to no data regarding the utilization of this technique for perforation of the distal midgut or in the re-operative field. We present two cases of midgut anastomotic complications successfully managed with modified graham patch repair at our institution.

However, the optimal approach between traditional laparoscopy (LC) and robotic-assisted laparoscopy (RAC) for diverticulitis remains unclear. Our research compares these techniques in patients diagnosed with left-sided diverticulitis treated at a single, tertiary referral center from 2019 to 2022.

Although a growing body of literature recommends strategies for improving racial equity in organizations and populations, little is known about how racial equity goals are operationalized in actuality, particularly in the context of state health and mental health authorities (SH/MHAs) attempting to promote population wellness while navigating bureaucratic and political constraints. This article seeks to examine the number of states engaging in racial equity work in mental health care, what strategies SH/MHAs use to improve their state's racial equity in mental health care, and how the workforce understands these strategies. A brief survey of 47 states found that all but one state (98%) is enacting racial equity interventions in mental health care.

Assisted living is a fast-growing living option for seniors who require residence-based activities for maintaining mental and physical health. Guided equine interactions may benefit seniors, so an on-site equine program was started at Hacienda at the River senior living community. For research purposes, twenty-four residents and associates, aged fifty-five or over, consented to physiological measurements before, during and after four guided sessions of stroking one of three horses for 10 min over 4-6 weeks.

Diagnosis of a Strangulated Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia with Point-of-Care Ultrasonography.

The use of point-of-care ultrasound for the diagnosis of bowel obstructions and hernias is becoming increasingly common in the emergency department (ED). Using a relatively rare case of an incisional port hernia, we demonstrate the ultrasound findings of a strangulated hernia causing a partial small bowel obstruction. A 46-year-old female presented four days following a laparoscopic surgery complaining of abdominal pain, nausea and lack of bowel movements.

Respiratory syncytial virus infection-associated hospitalization in adults: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: Once considered primarily a pediatric concern, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is gaining recognition as a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in adults. A better understanding of RSV epidemiology and disease in adults is needed to guide patient management and to assess the need for prophylaxis, vaccines, and treatments.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults admitted to four hospitals in Toronto, Canada, between September 2012 and June 2013 with RSV identified by a qualitative real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assay in nasopharyngeal swab or bronchoscopy specimens.

Blunt trauma patients with rib fractures were studied to determine whether the number of rib fractures or their patterns were more predictive of abdominal solid organ injury and/or other thoracic trauma. Rib fractures were characterized as upper zone (ribs 1 to 4), midzone (ribs 5 to 8), and lower zone (ribs 9 to 12). Findings of sternal and scapular fractures, pulmonary contusions, and solid organ injures (liver, spleen, kidney) were characterized by the total number and predominant zone of ribs fractured.

Porcine platelet lysate as a supplement for animal cell culture.

A novel supplementation of cell growth media based on a porcine platelet lysate was developed for culture of animal-derived cells. The platelet lysate was produced from porcine blood and contained lysate of platelets and plasma components. It showed satisfactory microbiological integrity and it carried only low amount of endotoxins (<10 EU/mL).

Monitoring of influenza virus hemagglutinin in process samples using weak affinity ligands and surface plasmon resonance.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was used to screen the interaction between a variety of affinity ligands and hemagglutinin (HA) from human influenza virus, with the aim of identifying low affinity ligands useful for the development of a rapid bioanalytical sensor. Three sialic acid-based structures and four lectins were evaluated as sensor ligands. The sialic acid-based ligands included a natural sialic acid-containing glycoprotein, human alpha1-acid glycoprotein (alpha1-AGP), and two synthetic 6'-sialyllactose-conjugates, with varying degree of substitution.

Treg depletion inhibits efficacy of cancer immunotherapy: implications for clinical trials.

Background: Regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg) infiltrate human glioblastoma (GBM); are involved in tumor progression and correlate with tumor grade. Transient elimination of Tregs using CD25 depleting antibodies (PC61) has been found to mediate GBM regression in preclinical models of brain tumors. Clinical trials that combine Treg depletion with tumor vaccination are underway to determine whether transient Treg depletion can enhance anti-tumor immune responses and improve long term survival in cancer patients.

Objectives: To estimate the lifetime prevalence of arrests for sexual offenses (with and without physical aggression) among men and women with psychotic disorders, the moderating effects of comorbid personality disorders and substance use disorders, and the prevalence rates for 4 specific psychotic disorders.

Background: Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) is elevated during prolonged overconsumption of alcohol and CDT is considered to be the most specific biochemical marker for alcohol overconsumption. However, an accurate method for analysing CDT is necessary because the test is frequently used for example in legal matters.

Methods: Patient serum samples were analysed with the Axis-Shield %CDT and eluates were pooled together.

College students (25 men and 25 women) were randomly assigned (within sex) to each of the 4 factorial groups, based on manipulation of affect quality (positive vs. negative) and directional focus (internal vs. external) of mental imagery, and to a control group receiving no manipulation.

Is closed diagnostic peritoneal lavage contraindicated in patients with previous abdominal surgery?

Objective: To compare the accuracies and complication rates of diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) in trauma patients with and without previous abdominal surgery.

Methods: A retrospective review of DPL accuracy and complication rate was performed using all ED trauma patients who underwent DPL during 1993 as identified by the trauma registry. Care was provided at a Level-1 trauma center, a 1,100-bed, central-city teaching hospital with an annual ED census of 84,000.

Length-tension recording system for strabismus surgery.

To meet the need for both scientific information and a clinical means for measurement of the mechanical parameters of the most difficult individual strabismus cases we present a technique for directly measuring and plotting the length-tension characteristics of the tissues supporting the eye. Semiconductor strain gauges mounted on the shanks of a custom machined eye forceps and an ultrasonic method of making continuous duction measurements of the eye have proved feasible. When the forceps are interfaced with a dedicated microcomputer, the system provides a permanent, quantitative, length-tension record displayed in real-time.
