Bike-Sharing Station Usage and the Surrounding Built Environments in Major Texas Cities.

This study analyzes the effect of different built environments on bike-share usage in nascent dock-based systems in three Texas cities. Past research offers little insight as to whether elements associated with higher bicycle usage in major cities affect ridership in secondary, developing bike-share markets within lower density American cities. In Austin and Houston, a positive relationship emerges between bike-share usage and proximity to high-comfort bicycle facilities.

Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most pervasive disease in the mining industry. The exposure of miners to noise levels above the permissible exposure level results in hearing loss of approximately 80% of coal miners by retirement age. In addition, between 2002 and 2011, approximately 48% of longwall shearer operators were overexposed in coal mines in the United States.

Recipe for success: stories of evidence-based practice implementation.

Through a collaborative partnership with administrators at a university, nurse leaders at a local hospital worked to create a culture in which nurses could provide evidence-based practice (EBP). The Best Practice Series was started, and two participants' experiences of implementing EBP in their units are described with encouraging results.

Transdermal drug delivery systems of albuterol: in vitro and in vivo studies.

In vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted with double- and single-layer albuterol transdermal pads designed for once-a-day application. In the in vitro experiments, dissolution of albuterol from pads and permeation of albuterol through hairless mouse skin were monitored. In the in vivo experiments, pads were applied to the chest area of four female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulata), and an albuterol aqueous solution was injected into the saphenous vein of the same animals in a crossover design.

Oral delivery of a renin inhibitor compound using emulsion formulations.

The oral delivery of O-(N-morpholino-carbonyl-3-L-phenylaspartyl-L- leucinamide of (2S,3R,4S)-2-amino-1-cyclohexyl-3,4-dihydroxy-6-methylhetane (I), a new renin inhibitor, was studied in the in vivo rat model using emulsion formulations. The components of the emulsion formulations were chosen based on their proposed effects on membrane structure, membrane fluidity, and solute transport. Effects of various experimental manipulations on neostriatal acetylcholine and dopamine release.

The release of endogenous acetylcholine and dopamine and the appearance of their metabolites, choline and dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), from neostriatal slices prepared from Fischer 344 rats was examined under various experimental conditions. There was a dose-dependent increase in the amount of neurotransmitter or metabolite as the medium potassium concentration was increased from 5 to 50 mM. Over an eight minute period in Krebs Ringer bicarbonate buffer containing 25 mM potassium, the rate of release of acetylcholine was 6 to 13 times greater than that of dopamine.

Gamma scintigraphy using Tc-99m labeled antibody to human chorionic gonadotropin.

A case report is presented describing a 27-year-old woman with invasive trophoblastic hydatidiform mole metastatic to the lung. Gamma scintiscanning, using a polyclonal and monoclonal antibody specific to human chorionic gonadotropin, hCG, and labeled with Tc-99m, is described. The area of the primary lesion in the uterus was demonstrated with both antibodies tested without computer subtraction techniques; metastatic deposits in the lung were detected only with the aid of blood pool subtraction techniques.
