Incident comorbidities in patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy: a multicenter nationwide study.

Purpose: Population-based and registry studies have shown that chronic hypoparathyroidism is accompanied by long-term complications. We aimed to evaluate the risk of incident comorbidity among patients with chronic postsurgical hypoparathyroidism in real-life clinical practice in Spain.

Methods: We performed a multicenter, retrospective cohort study including patients with chronic postsurgical hypoparathyroidism lasting ≥3 years with at least a follow-up visit between January 1, 2022 and September 15, 2023 (group H).

Background: Antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis (AIA) (neutrophils <500/µL) is a rare but serious complication in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

Methodology: Adult patients with AIA who were followed up at 12 hospitals in Spain were retrospectively studied. A total of 29 patients were studied.

5-Chloro-8-nitro-1-naphthoyl (NNap): A Selective Protective Group for Amines and Amino Acids.

The synthesis of 5-chloro-8-nitro-1-naphthoyl chloride and its use as a protective group for amines is described. Protection is carried out with an auxiliary amine or under mild Schotten-Baumann conditions in high yield (>86%), while deprotection can be achieved easily under gentle reducing conditions due to the large steric tension between C-1 and C-8 naphthalene substituents. The reaction has been successfully tested in dipeptide synthesis and amino alcohols protection, and it has proved selective for the ε-amine group of lysine.

Tryptophan association in water driven by charge-transfer interactions with electron-deficient aromatic haptens.

The ability of a series of electron-deficient aromatic compounds to form charge-transfer complexes with tryptophan in water has been evaluated by X-ray diffraction studies, UV-vis spectra and NMR. As dinitrophenyl (DNP) ligands are well-known to generate antibody-mediated responses and the π-π stacking interactions with tryptophan residues of the antibody Fab fragment have been reported, most of the aromatic receptors studied here are nitro derivatives. Charge-transfer interactions between the rich indole ring of tryptophan and the electron-deficient aromatic receptors have been observed in the solid state, as four crystal structures of the complexes were obtained.

An Adjustable Cleft Based on an 8-Sulfonamide-2-Naphthoic Acid with Oxyanion Hole Geometry.

Cleft type receptors showing the oxyanion hole motif have been prepared in a straightforward synthesis starting from the commercial 3,7-dihidroxy-2-naphthoic acid. The double H-bond donor pattern is achieved by the introduction of a sulfonamide group in the C-8 position of naphthalene and a carboxamide at the C-2 position. This cleft, for which the geometry resembles that of an oxyanion hole, is able to adjust to different guests, as shown by the analysis of the X-ray crystal structures of associates with methanol or acetic acid.

Thyroid lobectomy in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer: an analysis of the clinical outcomes in a nationwide multicenter study.

Background: Total thyroidectomy is the standard initial surgery for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), but the extent of the thyroidectomy remains controversial. Thyroid lobectomy (TL) has been widely used in eastern countries; however, its use has not been generalized in western countries, including Spain. Our aims were to analyse the clinical outcome of a multicentre nation-wide cohort of DTC patients treated by TL and to assess the proportion of patients who required completion of the thyroidectomy and who presented disease recurrence.

Methods: Retrospective study of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) or well-differentiated tumours of uncertain malignant potential (WDT-UMP) diagnosed between 2005 and 2015 and measuring ≥5 mm in adult patients from 17 hospitals. Pathological reports were reviewed to determine the cases that fulfil the original criteria of NIFTP and histology was reassessed.

Highly Enantioselective Extraction of Phenylglycine by a Chiral Macrocyclic Receptor Based on Supramolecular Interactions.

Using supramolecular interactions, a novel macrocyclic receptor is able to selectively extract zwitterionic phenylglycine from neutral aqueous solutions into chloroform with up to 91.8% . Modeling studies, nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, and X-ray diffraction analysis were carried out to explain the high enantioselectivity observed.

MEN1-associated primary hyperparathyroidism in the Spanish Registry: clinical characterictics and surgical outcomes.

In Cuba, maternal and child health care is based on the priority granted by the State, the implementation of the National Maternal and Child Health Program and the guarantee of equitable access to health services. This article describes the Cuban experience in this field, as well as its main achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. Prevalence of and risk factors for low bone mineral density in Spanish treated HIV-infected patients.

Objectives: Several studies have involved antiretroviral therapy in the pathogenesis of low bone mineral density (BMD), while others have not confirmed this association. In this study we analyze the impact of HIV status, traditional risk factors and antiretroviral therapy in BMD in an HIV-infected population living in Madrid.

Material And Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 107 individuals infected with HIV and exposed to antiretroviral treatment to estimate the prevalence of decreased BMD.

Pain and analgesic drugs in chronic venous ulcers with topical sevoflurane use.

Objective: Pain in chronic venous ulcers (CVUs) notably increases with the usual cleaning of the wound. Chronic pain is usually poorly controlled even with the multiple analgesic treatments available. Analgesics can have different serious adverse effects and medical interactions in old patients with several comorbidities.

Pain, Quality of Life, and Functional Capacity With Topical Sevoflurane Application for Chronic Venous Ulcers: A Retrospective Clinical Study.

Introduction: Chronic venous ulcers (CVU) commonly have poorly controlled pain.

Report: Thirty patients older than 65 years of age with painful CVU were reviewed. At the initial visit, cleaning without sevoflurane was performed.

Healing of chronic venous ulcer with topical sevoflurane.

The present study assesses the efficacy and safety of topical sevoflurane in chronic venous ulcers and its impact on analgesia and healing. This retrospective study included 30 patients older than 65 years with painful refractory chronic venous ulcers. Patients were treated with topical sevoflurane prior to the usual ulcer cleaning every 2 days for a period of 1 month.

Topical sevoflurane for chronic venous ulcers infected by multi-drug-resistant organisms.

Several anaesthetic drugs have demonstrated antibacterial properties in vitro. Anaesthetics can primarily affect the cell wall of both susceptible and multi-resistant bacteria. They may also have a synergistic effect with conventional antibiotics through an unknown mechanism.

A bio-inspired enantioselective small-molecule artificial receptor for β adrenergic agonists and antagonists and its application for enantioselective extraction.

Administration of enantiomerically pure β-adrenergic agonists and antagonists increases their activity and reduces side effects. We report here a small-molecule artificial receptor (SMAR) that, by mimicking the β-adrenergic receptor, is able to enantioselectively extract commercial β-adrenergic interacting drugs. The selectivity is justified according to DFT calculations and X-ray diffraction experiments.
