Impact of neoadjuvant therapy on angioplastic lobectomy: a retrospective study.

Objectives: The efficacy of neoadjuvant therapy (NT) prior to angioplastic lobectomy (AL) in non-small cell lung cancer is unclear. This study assessed its impact on morbidity, mortality and 5-year survival.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed 114 patients who underwent AL at 2 tertiary centres from January 2000 to December 2020.

Background: Life satisfaction as well as job satisfaction of teachers has a significant impact on educational outcomes.

Objective: To evaluate a model of factors predicting life satisfaction through the mediating role of job satisfaction.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a sample of 300 primary school teachers of both sexes (68% female, 32% male) and with a mean age of 42.

Ethnoveterinary Medicine and Ethnopharmacology in the Main Transhumance Areas of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain).

In this study, we document the practices of ethnoveterinary medicine and ethnopharmacology in the context of traditional transhumance routes that cross Castilla La Mancha from north to south. Transhumance is a type of grazing system that allows advantage to be taken of winter pastures (wintering places) and summer pastures by seasonal movement, twice a year, of cattle and their shepherds. Our study is based on over 200 interviews (from 1994 to 2021) conducted in 86 localities along eight major transhumance routes "cañadas reales" and 25 other minor transhumance routes, and involved 210 informants, 89 single and 121 groups, and 562 individuals, of which the majority were men.

Free-parafermionic Z(N) and free-fermionic XY quantum chains.

The relationship between the eigenspectrum of Ising and XY quantum chains is well known. Although the Ising model has a Z(2) symmetry and the XY model a U(1) symmetry, both models are described in terms of free-fermionic quasiparticles. The fermionic quasienergies are obtained by means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation.

Medicinal Plants in Traditional Herbal Wines and Liquors in the East of Spain and the Balearic Islands.

Homemade herbal preparations from the East of Spain are the witness of traditional medicine inherited from the ancient complex formulas of herbal teas and medicinal wines. In this study, we document the use of traditional alcoholic beverages, identify their ingredients, almost exclusively botanical, record the local medicinal uses of these mixtures, and discuss patterns of distribution of this knowledge in regions of eastern Spain, the Balearic Islands and Andorra. We determine marker species and relevant patterns of herbal formulas in the different regions of the territory.

A Comparison Study on Traditional Mixtures of Herbal Teas Used in Eastern Mediterranean Area.

Multipurpose herbal teas with numerous ingredients, in which flowers are the main component, are common in the traditional medicine and pharmacy of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean countries. In this study, we combine ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology field work techniques and botany and pharmacognosy laboratory methods for the study of traditional herbal mixtures with flowers, we identify their botanical ingredients and record the local medicinal uses of these mixtures, in Greece, Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Turkey. These, and their industrial versions, are analyzed, using morphological and multivariate analysis techniques in order to determine marker species, relevant patterns of combination and local styles.

Identification of an Immature Subset of PMN-MDSC Correlated to Response to Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy in Patients with Metastatic Melanoma.

PMN-MDSCs support tumor progression and resistance to ICI therapy through their suppressive functions but their heterogeneity limits their use as biomarkers in cancer. Our aim was to investigate the phenotypic and functional subsets of PMN-MDSCs to identify biomarkers of response to ICI therapy. We isolated low-density CD15 PMNs from patients with metastatic melanoma and assessed their immune-suppressive capacities.

Surgical Management of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.

Introduction: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common adverse effect after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and may be responsible for chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, and discomfort. Although its pathophysiology is still unclear, surgical management may be appropriate in selected cases.

Methods: In this video, we present a surgical revision of LRYGB, 12 years after the initial surgery, for late postoperative chronic diarrhea.

Ethnopharmacology in the Upper Guadiana River area (Castile-La Mancha, Spain).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Determining traditional remedies for human pathologies is relevant, when compared with the standard materia medica of the pharmacopoeias and dietary supplement databases, because we can assess the species and uses that have been previously studied and target understudied species for further pharmacological investigation.

Background: The aim of this study was to systematically record and analyze medicinal uses of natural resources (Plantae, Animalia, Fungi and minerals), mostly local, in the territories adjoining the upper Guadiana River and its tributaries. We were particularly interested in recording resources and pathologies linked to wetland areas, especially in the National Parks Las Tablas de Daimiel and Cabañeros.

Ethnopharmacological study of Sephardic remedies in the 19th century: The "Livro de Milizinas".

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The Sephardic or Judeo-Spanish communities kept a cultural heritage extremely relevant which is recognizable through the peculiar form of their language and practices. Medicine was one of the main professional activities among Jews of Spain before their expulsion in 1492. We expected to find ingredients and recipes in the Sephardic traditional medicine related to classical medicine and to modern ethnopharmacology of Spain, but also influenced by the host countries.

Anomalous bulk behavior in the free parafermion Z(N) spin chain.

We demonstrate using direct numerical diagonalization and extrapolation methods that boundary conditions have a profound effect on the bulk properties of a simple Z(N) model for N≥3 for which the model Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian. For N=2 the model reduces to the well-known quantum Ising model in a transverse field. For open boundary conditions, the Z(N) model is known to be solved exactly in terms of free parafermions.

Thalamocortical and corticothalamic pathways differentially contribute to goal-directed behaviors in the rat.

Highly distributed neural circuits are thought to support adaptive decision-making in volatile and complex environments. Notably, the functional interactions between prefrontal and reciprocally connected thalamic nuclei areas may be important when choices are guided by current goal value or action-outcome contingency. We examined the functional involvement of selected thalamocortical and corticothalamic pathways connecting the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) in the behaving rat.

Is there nothing new under the sun? The influence of herbals and pharmacopoeias on ethnobotanical traditions in Albacete (Spain).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: This paper has two overarching aims: (1) presenting the results of studying the Albacete tariff of medicines of 1526 and (2) broadly analyzing the origin and influences of medicinal traditional knowledge in the region of Albacete, Spain. We use historical and modern literature that may have influenced this knowledge. Our primary goal was to determine the ingredients used in the pharmacy in the 16th century CE in Albacete through the analysis of the tariff, and our secondary goal was to investigate until when ingredients and uses present in pharmacy and herbals persisted in later periods.

Parallel inputs from the mediodorsal thalamus to the prefrontal cortex in the rat.

There is a growing interest in determining the functional contribution of thalamic inputs to cortical functions. In the context of adaptive behaviours, identifying the precise role of the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) in particular remains difficult despite the large amount of experimental data available. A better understanding of the thalamocortical connectivity of this region may help to capture its functional role.

Facial artery perforator flap for reconstruction of perinasal defects: An anatomical study and clinical application.

Background: The concept of the facial artery perforator flap was developed for improved freedom during the reconstruction of perioral and perinasal defects. This flap enables tailor-made reconstruction and a shift from the traditional two-stage procedure to a one-stage technique. In this cadaveric study, the authors quantify the number, length, and diameter of facial artery perforators (FAPs) and present their clinical experience with the FAP flap.

Flexible Use of Predictive Cues beyond the Orbitofrontal Cortex: Role of the Submedius Thalamic Nucleus.

The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is known to play a crucial role in learning the consequences of specific events. However, the contribution of OFC thalamic inputs to these processes is largely unknown. Using a tract-tracing approach, we first demonstrated that the submedius nucleus (Sub) shares extensive reciprocal connections with the OFC.

Spirits and liqueurs in European traditional medicine: Their history and ethnobotany in Tuscany and Bologna (Italy).

Ethnopharmacological Relevance And Background: Fermented drinks, often alcoholic, are relevant in many nutritional, medicinal, social, ritual and religious aspects of numerous traditional societies. The use of alcoholic drinks of herbal extracts is documented in classical pharmacy since the 1st century CE and it is often recorded in ethnobotanical studies in Europe, particularly in Italy, where are used for a wide range of medicinal purposes. Formulations and uses represent a singular tradition which responds to a wide range of environmental and cultural factors.

Noncontractible loops in the dense O(n) loop model on the cylinder.

A lattice model of critical dense polymers O(n) is considered for finite cylinder geometry. Due to the presence of noncontractible loops with a fixed fugacity ξ, the model at n=0 is a generalization of the critical dense polymers solved by Pearce, Rasmussen, and Villani. We found the free energy for any height N and circumference L of the cylinder.

Functional heterogeneity of the limbic thalamus: From hippocampal to cortical functions.

Today, the idea that the integrity of the limbic thalamus is necessary for normal memory functions is well established. However, if the study of thalamic patients emphasized the anterior and the mediodorsal thalamus as the critical thalamic loci supporting cognitive functions, clinical studies have so far failed to attribute a specific role to each of these regions. In view of these difficulties, we review here the experimental data conducted in rodents harboring specific lesions of each thalamic region.

Dissociable effects of anterior and mediodorsal thalamic lesions on spatial goal-directed behavior.

Goal-directed behaviors are thought to be supported by a neural circuit encompassing the prefrontal cortex, the dorsomedial striatum, the amygdala, and, as more recently suggested, the limbic thalamus. Since evidence indicates that the various thalamic nuclei contribute to dissociable functions, we directly compared the functional contribution of the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) and of the anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN) in a new task assessing spatial goal-directed behavior in a cross-maze. Rats sustaining lesions of the mediodorsal or the anterior thalamus were trained to associate each of the two goal arms with a distinctive food reward.

Production of an anthocyanin-rich food colourant from Thymus moroderi and its application in foods.

Background: Anthocyanins and other polyphenols from flowers and bracts of Thymus sp. are studied. An anthocyanin-rich food colourant with interesting high antioxidant activity from Thymus moroderi has been obtained, and applied to colour foods.

Beverage and culture. "Zhourat", a multivariate analysis of the globalization of a herbal tea from the Middle East.

The "Zhourat" herbal tea consists of a blend of wild flowers, herbs, leaves and fruits and is a typical beverage of Lebanon and Syria. We aim to evaluate cultural significance of "Zhourat", to determine cultural standards for its formulation including key ingredients and to determine acceptable variability levels in terms of number of ingredients and their relative proportions, in summary what is "Zhourat" and what is not "Zhourat" from an ethnobotanical perspective. For this purpose we develop a novel methodology to describe and analyse patterns of variation of traditional multi-ingredient herbal formulations, beverages and teas and to identify key ingredients, which are characteristics of a particular culture and region and to interpret health claims for the mixture.
