Genotype by environment interactions (GEI) have attracted increasing attention in tropical breeding programs because of the variety of production systems involved. In this work, we assessed GEI in 450-day adjusted weight (W450) Nelore cattle from 366 Brazilian herds by comparing traditional univariate single-environment model analysis (UM) and random regression first order reaction norm models for six environmental variables: standard deviations of herd-year (RRMw) and herd-year-season-management (RRMw-m) groups for mean W450, standard deviations of herd-year (RRMg) and herd-year-season-management (RRMg-m) groups adjusted for 365-450 days weight gain (G450) averages, and two iterative algorithms using herd-year-season-management group solution estimates from a first RRMw-m and RRMg-m analysis (RRMITw-m and RRMITg-m, respectively). The RRM results showed similar tendencies in the variance components and heritability estimates along environmental gradient.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in patients with and without intraepithelial cervical lesions attended at specialized ambulatory in Recife (2007) and its association with biologic and demographic variables, habits, reproductive, clinical and gynecologic characteristics.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted including 70 women (35 with cytological cervical lesions and 35 with normal smears). Colposcopy and biopsy when necessary were performed and Chlamydia infection was determined by direct immunofluorescence.

The objective of this study was to determine the possible use of heifer pregnancy at 16 mo as a selection criterion and its possible genetic associations with hip height, yearling weight, and visual scores of conformation, finishing, and muscling. The data set contained records of 56,458 Nelore yearlings for the traits described above. Covariance components were estimated by bivariate animal models assuming a linear model for hip height, yearling weight and conformation, and finishing and muscling scores, and a nonlinear (threshold) model for heifer pregnancy.

The objective of this study is to analyze the presence of headache in pituitary tumors and their characteristics, the relationship between pituitary tumor size, biological type, local extension and intrasellar pressure (ISP). This is a prospective study, of 64 consecutive patients presenting with primary pituitary masses at Neuroendocrinological Department of General Hospital of Fortaleza from October 2005 to December 2006. We analyzed sex, age, headache (laterality, site, severity, quality, frequency, duration, associated symptoms, time of onset, trigger, alleviating factors and familial history) and tumor characteristics (type, size, quiasmatic compression, cavernous sinus invasion, sella turcica destruction, cystic or solid mass and ISP).

Successful learning of supraspan word lists such as the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) relies more on clustering strategies than rote learning, subserved by the frontal and temporal lobes. The authors studied the effect of word sequence in CVLT learning, in 15 patients with frontal (FLL) and 15 temporal (TLL) lesions, and 33 controls. Experimental measures were: number of clusters, number of first (FI), middle (MI) and last items (LI), in learning trials and in total immediate recall.

New therapeutic options for obesity include restrictive bowel surgery and surgery that promotes malabsorption, such as the Fobi-Capella (gastric bypass) and Scopinaro (biliopancreatic diversion) techniques. Complications associated with these procedures, such as hepatocellular failure, have been observed with increasing frequency. Reported here are 3 patients who, 7 to 24 months after bariatric surgery, developed hepatocellular failure, for which liver transplantation was considered to be indicated.

Records of 18,770 Nelore animals, born from 1975 to 2002, in 8 herds participating in the Nelore Cattle Breeding Program, were analyzed to estimate genetic parameters for mature BW. Mycobacteria synthesize unique polysaccharides that regulate fatty acid synthesis, namely the methylglucose lipopolysaccharide (MGLP) and the methylmannose polysaccharide. Glucosyl-(1-->2)-glycerate is found at the reducing end of MGLP. The mycobacterial gene encoding a glucosyl-3-phosphoglycerate synthase (GpgS), primarily found in actinobacteria and sharing very low amino acid identity with known homo-functional GpgSs, has been identified.

A low-G+C, Gram-positive isolate, designated strain CVS-8(T), was isolated from a sea salt evaporation pond on the Island of Sal in the Cape Verde Archipelago. This organism was found to be a catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile, spore-forming, aerobic, curved rod-shaped organism with an optimum growth temperature of about 35-37 degrees C and an optimum pH between 7.5 and 8.

Information on the distribution and prevalence of the economically destructive Begomovirus species and recombinant forms infecting fresh-market and processing tomato crops in Brazil is crucial in guiding breeding programs and also to understand the evolutionary mechanisms associated with the upsurge of so many species and quasi-species comprising this unique disease complex. An extensive survey was carried out over 3 years (between 2002 and 2004) aiming to study the diversity of begomoviruses in tomato plants, predominantly collected in central Brazil. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with degenerated primers was used to detect the begomoviruses in tomato leaf samples showing virus-like symptoms in commercial fields.

Background: The present study sought to evaluate the possibility of using the splenic artery for arterialization of a living donor liver graft.

Patients And Methods: In the period between August 2004 and April 2006, we performed 31 adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantations. In 27 patients (group A), the right or left hepatic artery was used to arterialize the graft, whereas in the other four cases (group B), we used the recipient splenic artery.

Background: In this study we retrospectively evaluated a group of symptomatic cirrhotic (n=30) and non-cirrhotic (n=60) patients submitted to laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in a public hospital in Brazil.

Methods: The groups were compared for surgical time, duration of hospitalization after surgery, period of permanence in the intensive care unit (ICU), use of blood derivatives, mortality rates, and transoperative and post-surgery complications. Other parameters, such as hepatic reserve capacity and presence of ascites, were also analyzed.
