We performed high-quality genome sequencing of eight strains of the species of the genus and examined the genomes of closely related strains from the databases to understand why is the only strain of this genus that utilizes glucose and fructose for growth. We found that the assimilation of these hexoses by was due to the presence of two transporters that are absent in all other genomes of strains of members of the genus examined. Some strains lack genes coding for glucokinase, but the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway appears to be otherwise complete.

The present study proposes a maize sprouts hydroponic growth model to evaluate the As, Cd, Cr and Pb translocation from multinutrient fertilizer and to do speciation of As and Cr in this fertilizer and As in parts of plant in order to predict their phytoavailability. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) was employed to speciate As and Cr directly on fertilizer solid sample. Arsenate (As) and a solid solution of FeCrO were the major species identified in the samples.

The lack of cellular and tissue specificities in conventional chemotherapies along with the generation of a complex tumor microenvironment (TME) limits the dosage of active agents that reaches tumor sites, thereby resulting in ineffective responses and side effects. Therefore, the development of selective TME-responsive nanomedicines is of due relevance toward successful chemotherapies, albeit challenging. In this framework, we have synthesized novel, ready-to-use ROS-responsive amphiphilic block copolymers (BCs) with two different spacer chemistry designs to connect a hydrophobic boronic ester-based ROS sensor to the polymer backbone.

Muscle electrical activity analysis can aid in the identification of oral motor dysfunctions, such as those resulting from an altered lingual frenulum, which consequently impairs feeding. Here, we aim to analyze the suprahyoid muscle electrical activity of infants via surface electromyography, based on lingual frenulum attachment to the sublingual aspect of the tongue and floor of the mouth during breastfeeding. In the present study, we have studied full-term infants of both genders, aged between 1 and 4 months old.

We herein demonstrate the outstanding protein-repelling characteristic of star-like micelles and polymersomes manufactured from amphiphilic block copolymers made by poly(butylene oxide) (PBO) hydrophobic segments and polyglycidol (PGL) hydrophilic outer shells. Although positively charged proteins (herein modeled by lysozyme) may adsorb onto the surface of micelles and polymersomes where the assemblies are stabilized by short PGL chains (degree of polymerization smaller than 15), the protein adsorption vanishes when the degree of polymerization of the hydrophilic segment (PGL) is higher than ∼20, regardless the morphology. This has been probed by using three different model proteins which are remarkably different concerning molecular weight, size, and zeta potential (bovine serum albumin (BSA), lysozyme, and immunoglobulin G (IgG)).

Brazilian beef cattle are raised predominantly on pasture in a wide range of environments. In this scenario, genotype by environment (G×E) interaction is an important source of phenotypic variation in the reproductive traits. Hence, the evaluation of G×E interactions for heifer's early pregnancy (HP) and scrotal circumference (SC) traits in Nellore cattle, belonging to three breeding programs, was carried out to determine the animal's sensitivity to the environmental conditions (EC).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess genomic predictions for beef fatty acids in Nelore cattle using the single-step genomic best linear unbiased predictor (ssGBLUP) method with SNPs and haplotype markers.
  • It analyzed data from 963 Nelore bulls, focusing on fat composition in their meat, where gas chromatography was used to quantify fatty acids after genomic quality control reduced the SNPs to 469,981 from a larger initial set.
  • The findings indicated low to moderate predictive accuracies for both SNP-based and haplotype-based approaches, but suggest that genetic improvement can still be achieved through genomic selection, especially favoring the SNP-based method for practicality and reduced bias.

Background: Surgical treatment of abdominal hernias in cirrhotics is often delayed due to the higher morbidity and mortality associated with the underlying liver disease. Some patients are followed conservatively and only operated on when complications occur ("wait and see" approach). The aim of this study is to compare outcomes of cirrhotic patients undergoing conservative non-operative care or elective hernia repair.

Introduction: An ongoing outbreak of yellow fever (YF) has been reported in Brazil with 1261 confirmed cases and 409 deaths since July 2017. To date, there is no specific treatment available for YF. Recently published papers describing in vitro and animal models suggest a potential effect of antiviral drugs (approved for the treatment of hepatitis virus) against flaviviruses, including YF.
