Introduction: Transplacental feto-maternal lipid exchange through the ATP-binding cassette transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1 is important for normal fetal development. However, only scarce and conflicting data exist on the involvement of these transporters in gestational disease.

Methods: Placenta samples (n = 72) derived from common gestational diseases, including pre-eclampsia (PE), HELLP, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and gestational diabetes, were assessed for their ABCA1 and ABCG1 expression levels and compared to age-matched control placentas with qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.

The leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE1 (BRI1) is the main ligand-perceiving receptor for brassinosteroids (BRs) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Binding of BRs to the ectodomain of plasma membrane (PM)-located BRI1 receptors initiates an intracellular signal transduction cascade that influences various aspects of plant growth and development. Even though the major components of BR signaling have been revealed and the PM was identified as the main site of BRI1 signaling activity, the very first steps of signal transmission are still elusive.

The expression of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) on lymphocytes of rhesus macaques and other Old World monkeys was unknown so far. We used our recently established monoclonal anti-rhesus macaque KIR antibodies in multicolour flow cytometry for phenotypic characterization of KIR protein expression on natural killer (NK) cells and T cell subsets of rhesus macaques, cynomolgus macaques, hamadryas baboons, and African green monkeys. Similar to human KIR, we found clonal expression patterns of KIR on NK and T cell subsets in rhesus macaques and differences between individuals using pan-KIR3D antibody 1C7 and antibodies specific for single KIR.

In situ formed Li/Cl phosphinidenoid complexes [Li(12-crown-4)][M(CO)5(ClPC5Me5)] 3a-c (M = Cr, Mo, W) reacted with cyclobutanone (4), cyclopentanone (5) and cyclohexanone (6) in Et2O to yield the first P-C5Me5 substituted C(3)-spirofused oxaphosphirane complexes 7a-c, 8a and 9a,a'. In the case of cyclopentanone and 1a the outcome of the reaction in THF was different: here the formation of 8a along with (anionic) phosphinoate complexes 14a and 15a was observed, the latter possess an unusual ring-opened oxaphosphirane and 2-cyclopentylidenecyclopentanone as co-ligands to the lithium cation. NMR, IR and MS data as well as single-crystal X-ray structures in the case of 7a-c, 8a, 9a and 15a are reported.

It has been highlighted that RNA quality and appropriate reference gene selection is crucial for the interpretation of RT-qPCR results in human placental samples. In this context we investigated the effect of RNA degradation on the mRNA abundance of seven frequently used reference genes in 119 human placental samples. Combining RNA integrity measurements, RT-qPCR analysis and mathematical modeling we found major differences regarding the effect of RNA degradation on the measured expression levels between the different reference genes.

After the health catastrophe resulting from the widespread use of asbestos which was once hailed as a new miracle material, the increasing use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has spawned major concern due to their similarities in terms of size, shape and poor solubility. Assessment of genotoxicity has shown that CNTs can damage DNA in vitro and in vivo. The genotoxic potential of different CNT samples varies considerably, however, with negative findings reported in a number of studies, probably due to the enormous heterogeneity of CNTs.

Physiological pregnancy is associated with an increase in lipids from the first to the third trimester. This is a highly regulated response to satisfy energy and membrane demands of the developing fetus. Pregnancy disorders, such as pre-eclampsia, are associated with a dysregulation of lipid metabolism manifesting in increased maternal plasma lipid levels.

Treatment of cartilage defects poses challenging problems in human and veterinary medicine, especially in horses. This study examines the suitability of applying scaffold materials similar to those used for human cartilage regeneration on equine chondrocytes. Chondrocytes gained from biopsies of the talocrural joint of three horses were propagated in 2D culture and grown on two different scaffold materials, hyaluronan (HYAFF®) and collagen (BioGide®), and evaluated by light and electron microscopy.

Progesterone receptor membrane component type 2 (PGRMC2) is strongly homologous to PGRMC1 which is highly expressed in ovarian cancer and other cancer cells and was claimed to play an important role in chemotherapy resistance. Whereas PGRMC1 has been extensively characterized in in vitro studies, comparably little is known about PGRMC2. To determine PGRMC2's role in ovarian cancer cell proliferation and mobility PGRMC1- and 2-depleted and -overexpressing SKOV-3 cells were generated.

Lake Titicaca, situated in the Altiplano high plateau, is the only ancient lake in South America. This 2- to 3-My-old (where My is million years) water body has had a complex history that included at least five major hydrological phases during the Pleistocene. It is generally assumed that these physical events helped shape the evolutionary history of the lake's biota.

The critical role of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes in disease resistance, along with their putative function in sexual selection, reproduction and chemical ecology, make them an important genetic system in evolutionary ecology. Studying selective pressures acting on MHC genes in the wild nevertheless requires population-wide genotyping, which has long been challenging because of their extensive polymorphism. Here, we report on large-scale genotyping of the MHC class II loci of the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) from a wild population in western Madagascar.

Sulawesi, the largest island in the Indonesian biodiversity hotspot region Wallacea, hosts a diverse endemic fauna whose origin has been debated for more than 150 years. We use a comparative approach based on dated phylogenies and geological constraints to test the role of vicariance versus dispersal in the origin of Sulawesi taxa. Most divergence time estimates for the split of Sulawesi lineages from their sister groups postdate relevant tectonic vicariant events, suggesting that the island was predominantly colonized by dispersal.

Introduction: The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter A1 (ABCA1) and ABCG1 are highly expressed in the placenta in various compartments, including the villous syncytiotrophoblast (V-STB) and foetal endothelial cells. Among other not yet characterized functions, they play a role in the foeto-maternal transport of cholesterol and other lipophilic molecules. In humans, preliminary data suggest expressional changes of ABCA1 and ABCG1 in pathologic gestation, particularly under hypoxic conditions, but a systematic expression analysis in common human pregnancy diseases has never been performed.
