Association between human papillomavirus infection and cytological abnormalities during early follow-up of invasive cervical cancer.

Considering the limitations of cytology for detection of residual cervical cancer after radiotherapy, the aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and viral load of high-risk HPV in cervical and vaginal samples during the early follow-up of patients treated for invasive cervical cancer and correlate the results with cytological examination. Conventional cytology and hybrid capture test were performed on cervical and vaginal samples of 52 women with invasive cervical carcinoma 3 months after therapy. High-risk HPV was detected in 46.

Expression of laminin-5 γ2 chain in cutaneous pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia.

Background: Since the use of laminin-5 as a marker of invasiveness has been proposed by several authors, our objective was to compare the expression of this protein in pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Methods: Sixty-four paraffin-embedded skin biopsy samples with diagnosis of epidermal hyperplasia (non-pseudocarcinomatous), pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia, actinic keratosis/carcinoma in situ, microinvasive and frankly invasive SCC were obtained for immunohistochemical study.

Results: Adjacent normal epithelium and epidermal hyperplasia (non-pseudocarcinomatous) showed no staining.

Can we tell the site of origin of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma? An immunohistochemical tissue microarray study of 194 cases.

To the workup of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of unknown primary, we studied an immunohistochemical panel including thyroid transcription factor (TTF-1), napsin A, villin, CDX-2, K903, CK5/6, p63, p16, CK7, and CK20. Using tissue microarray, we compared 194 SCC cases from the following sites: 35 lung, 34 skin, 14 cervix, 4 vagina, 16 vulva, 8 penis, 9 anus, 3 rectum, 10 esophagus, 4 bladder/urethra, and 57 SCC from various head and neck sites. p63 and K903 stained positively in 100% of cases, and CK5/6 in nearly 100% of cases, with the exception of 1 lung.

Rhinoscleroma causing severe bilateral nasal obstruction.

Rhinoscleroma is a chronic, infectious and granulomatous disease of the respiratory tract. There is often a delay in diagnosis due to unfamiliarity with the disease and also because culture is not always positive. We report a case in a 26-year-old woman with granular mass obstructing bilateral nasal cavities and causing breathing difficulty.

Fibrous mastopathy: clinical, imaging, and histopathologic findings of 31 cases.

Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze the cases of patients with a histological diagnosis of fibrous mastopathy, diabetic mastopathy, or lymphocytic mastopathy in association with other autoimmune diseases, and to conduct histological and imaging studies as well as follow up of the lesions.

Methods: Thirty-one patients meeting predetermined histopathological criteria for diabetic mastopathy, fibrous mastopathy, or lymphocytic mastopathy were analyzed for several factors: age at diagnosis; clinical manifestations; parity; breastfeeding; use of sex steroids for hormonal replacement therapy or hormonal contraception; associated diseases; mammographic findings; breast magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound; histological and cytological diagnosis; immunohistochemical and immunophenotyping identification of T- and B-lymphocytes and macrophages, and alpha-smooth muscle actin; and follow up.

Results: Fibrous mastopathy was present among diabetic and non-diabetic patients, patients with autoimmune diseases, and healthy individuals.

Lobomycosis: diagnosis and management of relapsed and multifocal lesions.

We report a case of lobomycosis in the left leg of a patient that had traveled to the endemic Brazilian Amazon region. After surgical resection of the lesion, there was relapse with local dissemination of the disease and the treatment was successfully performed by oral itraconazole and cryosurgery.

An experimental study of tissue reaction to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres (Artecoll) and dimethylsiloxane (DMS) in the mouse.

Various methods are available for the treatment of scars, wrinkles, and other cutaneous defects, and the material used must be as biocompatible as possible. This study analyzes the biological behavior of polymethyl methacrylate/bovine collagen (Artecoll) and of polydimethylsiloxane (DMS), using a histopathological study in mice. A prospective study was performed using 40 mice for each substance: polymethyl methacrylate/bovine collagen or polydimethylsiloxane was injected into the right ear, the left ear being used as a control.

Papillary carcinoma with nodular fasciitis-like stroma--a case report in pregnancy.

We report a case of Papillary carcinoma with nodular fasciitis-like stroma that is a rare variant of Papillary carcinoma characterized by a prominent stromal cell proliferation that causes difficulties in cytologic and histologic diagnosis. The patient was a 34-year-old woman, pregnant, presented with a 1-year history of a growing mass in neck, dysphagia, and hoarseness. Physical examination revealed a firm nodular mass in thyroid gland.

Effects of enoxaparin on the healing of abdominal wall in rats: study on breaking strength and histopathology.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of enoxaparin on the abdominal wall healing.

Methods: Sixty Wistar male rats were randomly distributed into two experimental groups. Group E: consisted of 30 rats, submitted to abdominal suture and treated with enoxaparin in a dose of 1 mg/kg of body weight, subcutaneously administered from immediate postoperative until the 7th day; Group C: consisted of 30 rats submitted to abdominal suture and treated with the equivalent dose per volume of NaCl 0.

[Non-functioning pituitary adenomas: clinical features and immunohistochemistry].

Experimental lagochilascariosis: histopathological study of inflammatory response to larval migration in the Murine model.

The goal of this study was to investigate the pattern of inflammatory response induced by Lagochilascaris minor in murine experimental model. For this purpose 115 mice were given 1000-3000 L. minor infective eggs "per os" and 51 uninfected mice were considered as controls.

[In vivo Terbinafine inefficacy on cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis in C57BL/6 mice].

The efficiency of terbinafine was tested in C57BL/6 mice inoculated with the Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis strain MHOM/BR/PH8. The mice were administered: terbinafine at a dose of 100mg/kg/d by via oral; 0.9% saline solution orally as the control; and subcutaneous sodium stibogluconate 400mg SbV/kg/d as gold standard, for 20 days.

[Cutaneous leishmaniotic ulcers with Corynebacterium diphtheriae].

In a prospective study to evaluate the influence of secondary bacterial infection on the evaluation of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in Corte de Pedra (Bahia), we isolated Corynebacterium diphtheriae in 7 (8.3%) out of 84 patients with ulcers studied. Due to the small number of patients with the presence of the bacteria in the ulcer, we could not conclude whether Corynebacterium diphtheriae behaves only as a colonizer nor its influence on the healing of the leishmaniotic ulcer.
