Digital image correlation (DIC) is an optical technique commonly used for measuring displacement fields by tracking artificially applied random speckle patterns, which can sometimes be a problem for tracking small-scale displacements. DIC is particularly useful for tracking the crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) of a notched metallic specimen subjected to three-point bending for fracture toughness determination because the edges of the notch provide the required textural features for DIC without the need for speckle patterns. This simplifies the set-up process as the specimen and stage geometries do not need to account for the placement of a strain gauge.

Effect of teriparatide on induced tooth displacement in ovariectomized rats: a histomorphometric analysis.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate morphologically the effect of teriparatide on induced orthodontic movement of the maxillary first molars in ovariectomized rats.

Methods: Ovariectomized Wistar rats (n = 16), ovariectomized rats treated with teriparatide (n = 16), and nonovariectomized rats (n = 16) had orthodontic tooth movement for 5 and 7 days. The group treated with teriparatide received a subcutaneous injection (Forteo, Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, Ind; 30 μg/kg/day) for 90 days after the ovariectomy.

In this study we investigated the hypolipidemic potential of dried powdered fruits of eggplant (Solanum melongena), which has been commercialized in Brazil to treat human hyperlipidemia. Thus, a double-blind placebo-controlled study of the effectiveness of oral Solanum melongena (SM) was conducted. The study consisted of 41 hyperlipidemic volunteers allocated to active treatment (n= 21) or placebo (n= 20).

To assess diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to nontoxic multinodular goiter and to compare them with previously reported American Thyroid Association (ATA) and European Thyroid Association (ETA) surveys, an online questionnaire was distributed to Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) members. An index case was presented (42-yr-old woman with an enlarged, irregular, nontender, 50- to 80-g thyroid and no clinical suspicion of malignancy or dysfunction), and 11 variations were proposed to evaluate how each alteration would affect management. In the present paper we studied the effect of urodilatin and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) on the proximal tubule Na+-ATPase and (Na+K+)ATPase activities. Urodilatin and ANP inhibit the Na+-ATPase activity but not the (Na+K+)ATPase activity. Maximal effect was observed at a concentration of 10(-11) M for both peptides.
