Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a key concept in pediatric oncology. This systematic review aims to update the conceptual HRQOL model by Anthony et al. (Qual Life Res 23(3):771-789, 2014), covering physical, emotional, social and general HRQOL aspects, and to present a comprehensive overview of age- and disease-specific HRQOL issues in children with cancer.

Objectives: Children undergoing chemotherapy can experience dysphagia due to non-erosive reflux disease (NERD). Oral mucositis (OM) associated with NERD-dysphagia in children with cancer has recently been defined with the acronym COMEDY (Clenching, Oral Mucositis, closed Eyes, DYsphagia). This study aims to identify the prevalence of the COMEDY pattern among chemotherapy-induced OM.

A unique collection of oceanic samples was gathered by the Tara Oceans expeditions (2009-2013), targeting plankton organisms ranging from viruses to metazoans, and providing rich environmental context measurements. Thanks to recent advances in the field of genomics, extensive sequencing has been performed for a deep genomic analysis of this huge collection of samples. A strategy based on different approaches, such as metabarcoding, metagenomics, single-cell genomics and metatranscriptomics, has been chosen for analysis of size-fractionated plankton communities.

The effect of conditioned medium (CM) or microvesicles (MVs), secreted by multicellular spheroids of oviductal cells, and the involvement of some microRNAs (miRNAs) were investigated in canine oocyte maturation. To generate CM, spheroids were cultured for 3 days. MVs were obtained by ultracentrifugation of CM at 100,000  and measured for size and concentration by NanoSight instrument.

Genetic linkage computation may be a repetitive and time consuming task, especially when numerous loci are assigned to a framework map. We thus developed ActionMap, a web-based software that automates genetic mapping on a fixed framework map without adding the new markers to the map. Using this tool, hundreds of loci may be automatically assigned to the framework in a single process.

By using scanning tunneling microscopy we found that the surface reconstruction of Ge/Si(001) epilayers evolves from (M x N) to (2 x N), and eventually to (2 x 1), during exposure to a Si flux. This sequence appears to be just the inverse of that observed during the growth of Ge or SiGe alloys on Si(001). However, molecular dynamics simulations supported by ab initio calculations allow us to interpret this morphological evolution in terms of Si migration through the epilayer and complex Si-Ge intermixing below the top Ge layer.

Naphthalene dioxygenase, a key enzyme in the dihydroxylation of naphthalene, is encoded by the plasmid pN3, responsible for naphthalene metabolism in Pseudomonas fluorescens N3. The naphthalene dioxygenase, including all the sequences for its expression and the regulatory region, has been localized on the 4.3-kb HindIII-ClaI fragment and on the 3.

A case of malabsorption syndrome (organic wasting, hypokaliaemia, metabolic acidosis, diarrhoea, hypochromic anaemia) following removal of 4 m of ileus for thrombophlebitis of the mesentery is described. In the first seven months, the patient was hospitalised five times to correct these imbalances by means of PA, with repeated venous incannulation. PA was continued at home each evening, together with heparin therapy (25,000 U calcic heparin/day).

Intravenous administration of 400-600 mg/day potassium canrenoate normalised plasma osmolarity and permitted rapid re-establishment of the metabolic picture in 9/12 patients with hyperosmolarity admitted to a resuscitation department for complex physiopathological pictures. The soundness of the drug in this sense is affirmed, as well as its permission of the recommencement of parenteral nutrition.
