The large language models (LLMs) represent a technology that has not yet seen widespread use. In addition to the automatic transcription of doctor-patient conversations, these tools will be able to support doctors in diagnosis and improve communication between doctors and patients. Their large-scale adoption is still limited due to concerns about sharing sensitive data, a lack of digital literacy, and the need to build new processes in clinical routines.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is experiencing advances and integration in all medical specializations, and this creates excitement but also concerns. This narrative review aims to critically assess the state of the art of AI in the field of endometriosis and adenomyosis. By enabling automation, AI may speed up some routine tasks, decreasing gynecologists' risk of burnout, as well as enabling them to spend more time interacting with their patients, increasing their efficiency and patients' perception of being taken care of.

Vaccine safety is a concern that continues to drive hesitancy and refusal in populations in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). Communicating about vaccine safety is a strategy that can successfully change personal and community perceptions and behaviors toward vaccination. The COVID-19 infodemic emergency with the rapid rollout of new vaccines and new technology, demonstrated the need for good and effective vaccine safety communication.

Article Synopsis
  • Europe is seeking to enhance cancer management using AI, specifically focusing on improving AI applications for childhood cancer, though current methodologies may show bias and limited reach.
  • A bibliometric analysis of 10,503 publications was conducted, resulting in 45 relevant studies, with most focusing on glial tumors and utilizing MRI for predictions; the median patient numbers were 89 for single-center and 120 for multicenter studies.
  • To boost the effectiveness of AI tools in pediatric brain tumors, it's essential to foster data sharing and collaboration among research centers and to consider privacy-preserving technologies under GDPR, especially with the European Health Data Space in mind.

Background: Emerging technologies have demonstrated outstanding potential in improving healthcare, yet their full integration remains a challenge for all medical specialties, including pediatrics. To support the swift implementation of technologies, we identified the current trends through a bibliometric review, and we conducted a survey on Italian pediatricians to gauge educational needs and willingness to integrate technologies into clinical practice.

Methods: A working group of pediatricians representing various backgrounds designed and coordinated the study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on autosomal recessive Long QT Syndrome (AR LQTS), particularly highlighting two forms: Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome with deafness, and the without deafness variant.
  • It examines patient data from Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital from 2012 to 2021, finding that 30% had compound heterozygosity and 70% had homozygous variants, with a significant number experiencing aborted sudden cardiac death (aSCD).
  • The treatment primarily involved Nadolol, with Mexiletine added for some patients, which effectively shortened QTc intervals and eliminated T-wave alternance, suggesting the need for further study to validate these preliminary findings.

Weight restoration is the primary goal of treatment for patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). This observational pilot study aims to describe adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and the consequent process of weight and functional recovery in outpatient adolescents diagnosed with AN. Eight patients with a median age of 15.

Introduction: Quality of life in childhood cancer survivors is largely affected by survivorship care and transition from treatment to long-term follow-up (LTFU). Referring to evidence-based recommendations, we wanted to evaluate LTFU care for survivors through a survey among the Italian Association for Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (AIEOP) centers. The project aimed to evaluate the availability of services in Italy, investigate strengths and weaknesses, analyze improvements of awareness in the field, and identify the gaps that need to be addressed by different centers.

We tested the performance of a machine learning (ML) algorithm based on signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of RSV infection or pertussis in the first year of age to support clinical decisions and provide timely data for public health surveillance. We used data from a retrospective case series of children in the first year of life investigated for acute respiratory infections in the emergency room from 2015 to 2020. We collected data from PCR laboratory tests for confirming pertussis or RSV infection, clinical symptoms, and routine blood testing results, which were used for the algorithm development.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review explores cognitive deficits among survivors of pediatric Central Nervous System tumors, aiming to identify common issues and their prevalence.
  • A total of 39 studies were analyzed, focusing on various cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and executive skills, with attention deficits being the most common at about 52.3% prevalence.
  • Results indicate that many survivors experience notable cognitive impairments long term, with a trend of declining intellectual functioning observed over time after treatment.

Background: The FLURESP project is a public health research funded by the European Commission, with the objective to design a methodological framework to assess the cost-effectiveness of existing public health measures against human influenza pandemics. A dataset has been specifically collected in the frame of the Italian health system. As most of interventions against human influenza are relavant against other respiratory diseases pandemics, potential interests in COVID-19 are discussed.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently gathered attention with the release of ChatGPT, a user-centered chatbot released by OpenAI. In this perspective article, we retrace the evolution of LLMs to understand the revolution brought by ChatGPT in the artificial intelligence (AI) field. The opportunities offered by LLMs in supporting scientific research are multiple and various models have already been tested in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks in this domain.

Eating disorders are considered one of the psychiatric disorders with a higher risk of death. Food addiction, related to some food addictive-like behaviours, is often in comorbidity with eating disorders and is associated with worse psychopathology. The present study aims to outline the food addiction profile, investigated using the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.

Web-based digital interventions may play a central role for health promoting strategies in the first "1000 days", from conception through the first 2 years of life. We developed a web platform providing evidence-based recommendations in the first 1000 days through short videos, and we studied engagement by users from preconception through parenthood in the second year of life. We described the access to videos by topic and used a multilevel model to explore the user characteristics associated with access to the video recommendations.

Background: COVID-19 had devastating effects on children's and adolescents' life, including neuropsychological impairment, discontinuation of social life and education. Since June 2021, antiCOVID19 vaccination has become available to adolescents in Italy up to 12 years and since December 2021 to children aged more than 5 years. The pediatric population represents a challenging target for vaccination.

Aims: The current method to diagnose impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is based on the 2-h plasma glucose (2-hPG) value during a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Robust evidence demonstrates that the 1-h post-load plasma glucose (1-hPG) ≥ 8.6 mmol/L in those with normal glucose tolerance is highly predictive of type 2 diabetes (T2D), micro and macrovascular complications and mortality.
