Current and tests applied to assess the safety of medical devices retain several limitations, such as an incomplete ability to faithfully recapitulate human features, and to predict the response of human tissues together with non-trivial ethical aspects. We here challenged a new hybrid biofabrication technique that combines bioprinting and Fast Diffusion-induced Gelation strategy to generate a vessel-like structure with the attempt to spatially organize fibroblasts, smooth-muscle cells, and endothelial cells. The introduction of Fast Diffusion-induced Gelation minimizes the endothelial cell mortality during biofabrication and produce a thin endothelial layer with tunable thickness.

Here, we challenge the use of ELF to further investigate the biocompatibility of resins used in manufacturing of blood filters, a category of medical devices representing life-saving therapies for the increasing number of patients with kidney failure. The biocompatibility assays were carried out by developing a cell model aimed at mimicking the clinical use of the blood filters and complementing the existing cytotoxicity assay requested by ISO10993-5.

This unmet need is also due to the lack of adequate pre-clinical models to mimic fibrosis and to be challenged novel by anti-fibrotic therapeutic venues. Here using bioprinting, we designed a novel 3D model where normal human healthy fibroblasts have been encapsulated in type I collagen.

We previously demonstrated in a rabbit model that AFT may be empowered by adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (AD-MSCs), which improve graft persistence by exerting proangiogenic/anti-inflammatory effects. However, their fate after implantation requires more investigation.

A prototypical system, consisting of a conjugated polymer blended with polyvinylpyrrolidone, mixed with WO nanowires, is analyzed. A critical strain rate of the electrospinning jet is determined by theoretical modeling at which point the polymer network undergoes a stretch transition in the fiber direction, resulting in a high molecular orientation that is partially retained after solidification.

Risks range from intoxication due to pathogen-contaminated edibles, to suboptimal potency of temperature-sensitive vaccines. High-performance and low-cost indicators are needed, based on conformable materials whose properties change continuously and irreversibly depending on the experienced time-temperature profile.

Light-emitting heterostructures showing amplified spontaneous emission are obtained on transient elements and used as illumination sources for speckle-free, full-field imaging, and transient optical labels are realized that incorporate QR-codes with stably encoded information. The transient behavior is also studied at the microscopic scale, highlighting the real-time evolution of material domains in the sublimating compound.

We report an approach to prepare polymer-capped CsPbBr perovskite nanocrystals by reacting oleylammonium/oleate-capped CsPbBr nanocrystals with poly(maleic anhydride--1-octadecene) (PMAO). PMAO contains succinic anhydride units that are reactive towards the oleylamine species present on the CsPbBr nanocrystals' surface and produces polysuccinamic acid, which, in turn, triggers the CsPbBr to CsPbBr conversion.

Here, ZnO nanowire-in-fiber hybrids with internal architectural order are introduced, exhibiting a combination of polarized stimulated emission, low propagation losses of light modes, and structural flexibility. Ultrafast transient absorption experiments on the electrospun material show optical gain which gives rise to amplified spontaneous emission with a threshold lower than the value found in films.

Here we study the photophysics of poly(3-hexylthiophene) configured with different degrees of supramolecular ordering, spin-coated thin films and templated nanowires, and find marked differences in their optical properties. Transient absorption measurements evidence a partially-polarized stimulated emission band in the nanowire samples, in contrast with the photo-induced absorption band observed in spin-coated thin films.

Here, we demonstrate hybrid, organic-inorganic light-emitting nanofibers based on MoS2 nanoparticle dopants obtained through a simple and inexpensive sonication process in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and successfully encapsulate the nanofibers in polymer filaments. The gentle exfoliation method used to produce the MoS2 nanoparticles results in low defectiveness and preserves the stoichiometry.

Unsolved issues remain the spatial integration of stem cells into damaged areas of the organ, the commitment in the required cell type and the development of improved bioengineered devices. In this respect, biomaterials and architectures have to be specialized to control stem cell differentiation.
