Background: Medication reconciliation is a key tool in the prevention of adverse drug events.

Objective: To assess the impact of an electronic reconciliation tool in decreasing unintended discrepancies between medications prescribed after surgery and the patient's usual treatment.

Setting: General Surgery Department of Gregorio Marañón's University General Hospital, Madrid.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) generally have poor outcomes, prompting a study on recurrence risks in those treated with chemoradiotherapy and surgery.
  • The study involved 335 patients, with an emphasis on analyzing factors linked to locoregional recurrence (LRR) over an extensive median follow-up period of 72.6 months.
  • Key findings identified several high-risk factors for LRR, including distal margin distance, resection status, and tumor grade, leading to the development of a prognostic index to improve personalized treatment strategies.

Introduction: The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of Vicryl Plus(®) suture in reducing the rate of postoperative wound infection in elective colorectal surgery.

Methods: A prospective case-control multicenter study with 480 patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery was performed between 2006 and 2007. Patients were divided in 2 groups of equal sample size: group 1, closure of the abdominal wall using Vicryl Plus(®) and group 2 where PDS II(®) was used.

Article Synopsis
  • Laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer is as safe as open surgery, with quicker recovery times and less blood loss.
  • During the study, patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures had shorter hospital stays but similar postoperative complications compared to open surgery.
  • Long-term outcomes like locoregional control, disease-free survival, and overall survival were comparable between the two surgical methods.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates factors influencing survival in patients who underwent surgery for locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC) combined with intraoperative electron-beam radiation therapy (IOERT).
  • The analysis involved 60 patients from 1995 to 2011, comparing outcomes between extended surgeries (which included additional tissue resection) and non-extended surgeries, while also noting the impact of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).
  • Findings suggest that receiving EBRT, achieving clear surgical margins (R1 resection), and avoiding tumor fragmentation significantly enhance survival rates and local tumor control for patients with LRRC, highlighting the treatment's effectiveness.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Alberto Munoz-Calero"

  • His studies emphasize the importance of medication reconciliation, particularly the impact of electronic tools in reducing discrepancies in patient medication post-surgery, thus enhancing patient safety in surgical settings.
  • Munoz-Calero's research on locally advanced rectal cancer explores the effectiveness of combining preoperative chemoradiotherapy with surgical techniques like laparoscopic resection and intraoperative electron-beam radiation therapy, highlighting improved long-term outcomes and recurrence risk factors.
  • Additionally, his investigations into postoperative wound infections in elective colorectal surgeries assess the effectiveness of different suture materials, aiming to reduce complication rates and improve surgical recovery.
