Objectives: To summarise the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on urological practice globally with a focus on Australian initiatives, as the pandemic resulted in radical changes in healthcare infrastructure and policies.
Methods: We conducted a literature review of the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE) and Web of Science medical databases. The key terms used to conduct our search algorithm comprised of 'COVID', 'wait list or wait time or delay', 'urology', 'surgery' and 'outcomes', and generated 231 articles.

We assessed postprandial incretins (GLP-1 and GIP), intestinotropic hormone GLP-2, endotoxin LPS, Zonulin (a marker of intestinal permeability), hepatokines, adipokines and NF-kB activation in circulating MNCs during a meal tolerance test in 52 biopsy proven MASH patients randomized to curcumin Meriva or placebo and 26 matched controls. At baseline, MASH-CKD had a lower GLP-2 response and a 2-fold higher postprandial LPS and NF-kB activation in MNCs than MASH patients without CKD, but similar remaining postprandial or fasting parameters.

The considered properties range from structural behaviors and excitation energies to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and nonradiative intersystem kinetic constants. Results show that the SOC strongly increase upon chalcogen substitution and, accordingly, the computed nonradiative kinetic constant also indicate an efficient singlet-triplet intersystem crossing in the sulfur containing macrocycle.

The role of nitric oxide (NO) as an "unconventional" therapeutic and the strict dependence of biological effects on its concentration require the generation of NO with precise spatiotemporal control. The development of precursors and strategies to activate NO release by excitation in the so-called "therapeutic window" with highly biocompatible and tissue-penetrating red light is desirable and challenging. Herein, we demonstrate that one-photon red-light excitation of Verteporfin, a clinically approved photosensitizer (PS) for photodynamic therapy, activates NO release, in a catalytic fashion, from an otherwise blue-light activatable NO photodonor (NOPD) with an improvement of about 300 nm toward longer and more biocompatible wavelengths.
