This review focuses on the latest advancements in using biomarkers to diagnose, predict outcomes, and guide the treatment of different types of thyroid cancer, such as anaplastic, papillary, medullary, and follicular thyroid carcinoma. We highlight the key role of both traditional and new biomarkers in improving the treatment of these cancers. For anaplastic thyroid cancer, biomarkers are crucial for detecting distant metastases and making treatment decisions.

Gastric cancer ranks fifth in both world prevalence and lethality, with a 5-year survival of less than 30%. HLA-G, a non-classical class I HLA gene, has emerged as a potential marker for cancer susceptibility and prognosis due to its immunomodulatory properties. Its level of expression is regulated by polymorphisms in the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) polymorphisms, which form various combined haplotypes (UTR-1 to -9).

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication in patients undergo-ing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) due to a combination of several factors: increased intra-abdominal pressure, heat stress and drug tox-icity. Patients admitted to Intensive Care Unit after CRS and HIPEC during 129 months. Data recorded were: demographic characteristics; severity of illness, haematology and basic chemistry panels (renal function and electrolytes), type of cancer and extension, HIPEC drug and temperature, fluid balance, ICU and hospital stay and mortality.

The Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system contains a set of genes involved at many levels in the innate and adaptive immune response. Among the non-classical HLA class I genes, HLA-G stands out for the numerous studies about its pivotal role in regulating/modulating immune responses. Also, its involvement in extravillous cytotrophoblast function, viral infections, autoimmunity, and cancer has been extensively documented.

Pancreatic cancer is a type of gastrointestinal tumor with a growing incidence and mortality worldwide. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) constitutes 90% of cases, and late-stage diagnosis is common, leading to a 5-year survival rate of less than 10% in high-income countries. The use of biomarkers has different proven translational applications, facilitating early diagnosis, accurate prognosis and identification of potential therapeutic targets.

  • The study focuses on the recurrence of isolated pancreatic metastases from Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) and evaluates the outcomes of repeat pancreatic resections after initial surgery.
  • It involved a retrospective analysis of 131 resections in 116 patients from January 2010 to May 2020, comparing those who had single versus iterative pancreatic surgeries.
  • Results indicated that while disease-free survival (DFS) rates were slightly better in the iterative group, overall survival (OS) rates were similar for both groups, suggesting that repeat surgery is a viable option for managing RCC-related pancreatic metastases.

  • Spontaneous cervical hematoma often arises from bleeding in or around the parathyroid gland, typically linked to conditions like giant adenomas or hyperplasia, and can lead to severe complications if it compresses the airway.
  • For stable patients, treatment generally includes monitoring and possible delayed surgery, while those with airway issues require urgent surgical intervention.
  • The case study discusses a 78-year-old patient with multiple health issues who experienced neck pain and respiratory problems due to a spontaneous cervical hematoma from a giant parathyroid adenoma, resulting in complicated post-operative recovery.

  • * A case involving a 77-year-old woman who had surgery for this cancer showed an unusual recurrence in the sigmoid colon nine years after her initial treatment.
  • * After performing surgery to remove the affected part of the colon, it was confirmed that the tumor was a metastasis from the original endometrial adenocarcinoma, but the patient responded well and has been disease-free for 18 months post-treatment.

  • Gallbladder volvulus is a rare cause of acute cholecystitis where the gallbladder twists around its own blood supply, leading to abdominal pain and complications.
  • An 87-year-old woman was diagnosed after a CT scan and ultrasound revealed a twisted and distended gallbladder without gallstones, prompting an emergency cholecystectomy.
  • Early detection and surgical intervention are critical due to the risk of severe complications like necrosis and perforation, but misdiagnosis is common due to similar symptoms with acute cholecystitis.

  • * Results show that patients with right-sided (RS) tumors have significantly lower overall survival (OS) and cancer-related survival (CRS) compared to those with left-sided (LS) or rectal tumors, particularly in advanced stages.
  • * The research indicates that tumor location is an independent prognostic factor, with RS patients facing greater challenges in survival rates, especially at stage III and IV, highlighting the need for further analysis of these differences.

Background: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have benefits for survival in some cancers with peritoneal metastasis. Hematologic toxicity described rate is 2 to 38%.

Methods: Patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) after CRS and HIPEC over 78 months.

Introduction: Treatment of Peritoneal Surface Malignancies (PSM) with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has achieved results never seen before in these patients, which classically have a poor prognosis. The possibility of conducting clinical trials in these diseases is complicated, since some of them are rare, so the analysis of large databases provides very valuable scientific information. The aim of this study is to analyze the global results of the National Registry of the Spanish Group of Peritoneal Oncologic Surgery (REGECOP), whose objective is to register all patients scheduled for HIPEC nationwide.

  • Adipocytic tumors are the most common soft tissue cancers, with liposarcoma being the most prevalent malignant type; however, their evolution and prognosis, especially in retroperitoneal areas, haven't been well studied before.
  • A retrospective analysis was conducted on 52 patients diagnosed with liposarcoma from 2000 to 2020, categorizing them based on tumor location (retroperitoneal vs. non-retroperitoneal) and examining factors like recurrence, treatment, and mortality.
  • The study found significant differences in survival rates of liposarcoma subtypes based on their location, with better outcomes for certain types in non-retroperitoneal regions; surgical margins were crucial for prognosis,

Importance: Peritoneal metastasis in patients with locally advanced colon cancer (T4 stage) is estimated to recur at a rate of approximately 25% at 3 years from surgical resection and is associated with poor prognosis. There is controversy regarding the clinical benefit of prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in these patients.

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of intraoperative HIPEC in patients with locally advanced colon cancer.

The presence of cells with regulatory functions in patients with cancer is one of the mechanisms whereby the immune system cannot confront tumor growth. We sought to determine the prevalence of immunoregulatory T-cell subpopulations, expressing the latency TGFβ-associated peptide (LAP), in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. T cells were enriched from blood or gastric tissue (tumoral, TT or tumor-free, TF) samples from 22 patients, 6 with early (EGC) and 16 with advanced gastric cancer (AGC).

Background: The French PRODIGE 7 trial, published on January 2021, has raised doubts about the specific survival benefit provided by HIPEC with oxaliplatin 460 mg/m (30 minutes) for the treatment of peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer. However, several methodological flaws have been identified in PRODIGE 7, specially the HIPEC protocol or the choice of overall survival as the main endpoint, so its results have not been assumed as definitive, emphasizing the need for further research on HIPEC. It seems that the HIPEC protocol with high-dose mytomicin-C (35 mg/m) is the preferred regime to evaluate in future clinical studies.
