COPD is a condition associated with chronic pulmonary inflammation, characterized by macrophage activation, neutrophil recruitment, and cell injury. Many substances contained in cigarette smoke, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), have been proposed to be responsible for the inflammatory process of COPD.
