Persistent hematologic and immunologic disturbances in 8-year-old Dutch children associated with perinatal dioxin exposure.

Perinatal exposure to Dutch "background" dioxin levels in 1990 was high, but comparable with that of other industrialized Western European countries. Exposure during the sensitive perinatal period may cause permanent disturbances. Therefore, we assessed the health status and various hematologic and immunologic parameters among our longitudinal cohort.

The Rh complex exports ammonium from human red blood cells.

The Rh blood group system represents a major immunodominant protein complex on red blood cells (RBC). Recently, the Rh homologues RhAG and RhCG were shown to promote ammonium ion transport in yeast. In this study, we showed that also in RBC the human Rh complex functions as an exporter of ammonium ions.

Three parameters, plasma thrombopoietin levels, plasma glycocalicin levels and megakaryocyte culture, distinguish between different causes of congenital thrombocytopenia.

Fourteen children with congenital thrombocytopenia were analysed in order to unravel the mechanisms underlying their thrombocytopenia and to evaluate the value of new laboratory tests, namely measurement of plasma thrombopoietin (Tpo) and glycocalicin (GC) levels and analysis of megakaryocytopoiesis in vitro. Three groups of patients were included. The first group (n = 6) was diagnosed with congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia.

Plasma thrombopoietin levels in patients with chronic renal failure.

Introduction: Thrombopoietin (Tpo) is the most important regulator of thrombocytopoiesis. The main sites of Tpo production are the liver and the kidney produce Tpo. In the current study, the influence of renal failure on overall Tpo production was evaluated.

Idiopathic, immune, infectious, and idiosyncratic neutropenias.

In idiopathic and immune neutropenias the susceptibility to infectious agents is highly variable, but the reason why some patients exhibit no undue susceptibility whereas others contract life-threatening infections is poorly understood. An important factor is the efficacy of delivery of neutrophils to the tissues. Recent investigations of the mechanisms for mild to moderate chronic neutropenias have shown the significance of interactions between myelopoiesis and the immune system, as for example, in relation to immunoglobulin aberrations and the cytokine network.
